Single Titan or GTX 780 2-Way SLI for 1440p??

Is a fairly simple question... What do you guys think it's better for 1440p?? I'm building my first high-end system and i don't know which GPU is best...

Might get another 1080p screen in the future but mostly for running virtual machines and other stuff... being able to work in 2 O.S. at the same time, maybe an additional screen for coding and productivity... not just a gaming build but a high performance one too.

I'm thinking EVGA GTX Titan SC or ASUS GTX 780 Direct CU II OC.

Thanks in advanced!!  :D

Waiting...

if you get a titan, you could still upgrade later

One 780 would probably do. Two will do for sure. The Titan is not really worth the price premium and more of a penis-extension.

But I'd wait for the R9 series to be announced. [@CoolBeans]. Linus is in Hawaii for the launch event, so you gonna have infos on them soon ;)

Personally I'm gaming on a 1440p [+2x 1080 for productivity] screen with 680 SLI, havn't encountered any problems yet soooo. 3GB Vram will do fine.

I'd say wait for R9 ,they will probably have 4GB 512bit. Otherwise the 780s would be a better option. A Titan hasn't got raw power use 6GB anyway.

I would go 780 SLI you will get better performance that way, 3GB is also plenty of VRAM for 1440p.

Wait for the R9-290X, word is that it'd be about 600USD each. That is lower than a GTX780, let alone Titan, and according to the leaked benchmarks, it is faster  than a GTX780 and trades blows with a Titan. A Titan performance at a cost 60% of a Titan, best wait....

I've read about the R9 so i was thinking about getting one... but nVidia's prices are certainly gonna drop... so which one would be a better option?? ... I'm new to high end graphic cards so i just know what i've read so far...

Also... I've seen a couple replies on this thread saying a single GTX780... So a single GPU would be better than a SLI or Crossfire for 1440p??

Most likely.

We can't tell yet, we need some data on both. Leaks suggest the R9, but it's leaks / rumors so just be patient ^^

SIngle GPU is less of a compability / driver hassle. Dual GPU will usually give you better FPS. But for a single 1440p screen one 780 is fine.

I'll wait for the R9 then... Would appreciate your comments when they are released... Could use some help picking a GPU  :D

They will be revealed tomorrow and Linus will be reffering to it from the place. With the current rumors, you should be able to buy 2 R9-290Xes for $1200, which will perform better than Titans, for the price of 780s, with better VRAM solution. Altough I expect the price to be at least $650 from a respected manufacter and with nice cooling.

I'd recommend the Galaxy GeForce GTX 780 HOF since it's the fastest 780 out of the box right now and has a great cooler on it. Titans are overpriced and you would get much better performance from SLI 780's for the money.

2 780s, 1440P won't need the extra VRAM on current games

Hi there!!

I actually have 2-Way 780 SC Watercooled and they DO need all vRAM with current top games at 1440p in single monitor.

A 780 superclocked isn't able to manage 60fps at 1440 in the top games right now (Max Payne 3, Crysis 3, FC3, Total War Rome II, .....)

If I were you, I would look a lot to the new AMD with 4GB of memory and 512 memory bus. If you want NVIDIA, right now and if you plan to run top games at 1440p at max settings now and in the next two years, I would get a Titan and maybe the next year another one.

Just based on my experience with my rig, and no talking about money-performance. 2 780 outperforms a Titan right now, but I'm not sure how they gonna survive in the vRAM rising the next couple of years.

See you!!

Luck

The 780 is technically a slightly cut down Titan. I would go with a single 780 sins the performance different is not that big between the two and the 780 cost quite a bit less. if you have the money and you are running big resolutions then maybe two 780 would be a good chose.

Guys, hold the GTX780 recommendations, OP has already stated that he'd be waiting for the R9 before deciding. Smart move if it's as fast as it's been made out to be, as fast as a GTX Titan, perhaps a tad faster, and costing between the rumored 599USD to 649USD, it's the price of a GTX780 but with the performance of a GTX Titan (at 999USD), can't fault the OP for waiting.

If money is even a consideration go for the 780's.  Titan(s) is/are for having the best of the best regardless of price but they are not really worth the money in terms of price/performance ratio.  Two 780's will crush any game out there at any single monitor resolution (and will do very well even in Nvidia surround).  The 6GB of Titan are necessary however if you want something like 3 x 1440p/1600p screens and max AA but you'd likely need 3-4 Titans for such a demanding scenario)...

The MSI Twin Frozr 3/4 /Sapphire Dual-X/Vapor-X / HIS IceQ X2 are great aftermarket coolers if they do appear on the new R9 cards.
