Do you think the gigabyte gtx 970 would be able to make the cut?

This is my parts list that I am planning to use

Intel core i5-6600K
Gigabyte GV-N970WF30C-4GD
Cooler master seidon 120V plus
Asus Z170 Pro Gaming
Corsair Vengence CMK16GX4M2A2400C14 16 GB
Seagate ST2000DM001 2TB Barracuda
Samsung 850 EVO SSD 250GB
corsair cs650m semi mod gold eff
Corsair carbide air 540
Windows 10

I mean you didn't ask me personally, but from my experience with 1440p and since my gpu is similar in performance, I would say yes, the gtx 970 is enough. Be sure to turn down AA a bit as it is not needed nearly as much at that res. This will give you a nice bump in performance and make 1440 very enjoyable. Heck if you get a 25" you probably don't need any AA, at least I didn't when I had the U2515H

1440p worth the bang for the buck?

yes

its nearly twice as many pixels, and also, it means you can get a sharp image on screens above 24" which is the max for 1080p monitors (in my opinion)

If you have the money to swing a 1440, I'd go that route.

[CPU: 4.7ghz I5 6600k] [MBAsus Z170 Pro G] [RAM: G.Skill 2400 16GB(2x8)]

[GPU: MSI Twin Frozr GTX 970] [PSU: XFX Pro 850W] [Cooler: Hyper 212 Evo]

If you have the power to run 1440p and have the money for a $200-$400 monitor then go for it.

The PB258Q, PB278Q, and U2414H are what I'd go for.

Higher resolution panel, more expensive gpu required to run the same games at the same settings.

For gaming, no.  For productivity and work, hell yeah. It's a nightmare to go back to 1080p for work once you've used higher resolution monitors.

I feel like it isnt. Most games dont take advantage of the extra real estate and the extra power requied for 1440p over 1080p could be put to use elsewhere.

Real estate? no games dont change FOV just because you use a higher resolution

But 1440p is SO much sharper and more beautiful than 1080p

and "extra" power doesnt matter as long as you HAVE the power to run it

its night and day to me

I have to agree with a some of the points here. I don't know. For me its more of a productivity thing than a gaming thing. 1440p for work is a godsend for work. For gaming, I notice very little.

I love my 27" korean 1440p, so worth it.  Even if the refresh rate can't quite reach 100hz, I'd pay just for the extra on screen real estate.  You can just have so many windows open without sacrificing clarity. It looks great in games as well, going back and replaying older games at 1440p is a great experience.9_9

yeah its so much better for working on, but if I was only going to pick one monitor for all tasks it wouldnt be a crappy 1080p one

1440p is better in every way, and potentially better than 4k since there are no scaling issues and its not as hard to run

I have the Asus PG278Q 144Hz 1440p G-Sync monitor and it is such an improvement over 1080p in my opinion, even for gaming. Going back to 1080 looks strange. Especially when photo and video editing

i'd say, go 1440p.  Not because games are just better in general in 1440p, but because the new nvidia gpu's seem to be beastly, and when you get a new gpu, it'll probably take advantage of your resolution for games better.  However, if you dont plan to get a new gpu in the next many years, i'd get a 1080p with gsync/freesync monitor.  more fps > resolution.

i still think 1440p is for productivity more than for gaming, but at least now we have reasonably priced hardware to run the resolution.

Obviously 1440p is much sharper and better than 1080p, but there is a lot of power needed to run demanding games at sensible settings on 60 FPS on this resolution, and G-sync/FreeSync 1440p monitors are terribly overpriced. Even though FreeSync costs nothing, but it happens that all 1440p FreeSync IPS monitors are coming from bad manufacturers like Asus or Acer that have not only low quality but also overpriced monitors.

So considering no reasonable 1440p adaptive sync options, touching 1440p with anything else than 980Ti/FuryX is a bit problematic IF you play demanding games, this is important point. If you don't play demanding games then there is no problem. But if you do and you don;t have enough power then there is no point on going to 1440p, just get yourself nice 1080p monitor and don't create unnecessary performance problems. If you have enough power then sure, get 1440p, this is very noticeable upgrade from 1080p and will last you for years.

I am just done with an odysee of displays:

  1.  24" Samsung TN 1080p
  2. 25" Dell U2515H IPS 1440p
  3. 28" PB287Q TN 4k
  4. 29" LG29UM67 IPS 1080p Ultrawide

The real wow effect for gaming was with the last one actually. I am sitting in front of it right now and it made the biggest difference when playing games.
For regular desktop use, well that's where the 1440p display had its time to shine. Not much bigger display, but a lot more real estate to work on. Also very nice for gaming though, but mostly due to the IPS display, not so much the pixel count.

VERY much my personal opinion and I know many people swear on higher pixel density, but for that is something I notice when I look for it, not so much when I am immersed in a game.

Another reason why I went for the 2560x1080 resolution is how easy it is to drive. My 290 will still keep up for a few more years with this display.
