Question about Apple TV audio out

So we have an Apple TV hooked up to our Denon home theater reciever. It works great. But, we also have outside speakers running off an old Sony reciever that we would like to play music from via the Apple TV.

The Sony doesn't have an HDMI or Optical in. I have tested with another receiver, and I know that the Apple TV can output to HDMI and Optical at the same time.

So I was looking at buying an optical audio extractor (Here). But the optical audio extractor isn't bitstream compatible.

So here's my question: Does the Apple TV (3rd gen, not the newest) output music played through home sharing as PCM or Bitstream?

Thanks!

You know that guy that games on a MacBook? I'm that guy.

Why don't you connect the apple thing to your denon via optical and check yourself?
