Next Gen AI “Viv” to be Debuted at an Industry Conference Monday, May 9th

Source 2: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-switch/wp/2016/05/04/siris-cr

Source 3: http://www.engadget.com/2016/05/05/viv-labs-ai-siri/

  • People behind Siri (Dag Kittlaus, Adam Cheyer, Chris Brigham) are readying another big leap in AI

  • “Viv, The Global Brain”

    • “Viv radically simplifies the world by providing an intelligent interface to everything”

  • Been in the works for approximately four years

  • Viv is planned as an open system, like Siri was prior to being purchased by Apple in 2010

Example of How it Works

  • A group of engineers sat down to order a pizza in an entirely new way

  • “Get me a pizza from Pizz’a Chicago near my office,” one of the engineers said into his smartphone

  • A text from Viv popped up asking “Would you like toppings with that?”

  • “The eight engineers all started jumping in: “Pepperoni.” “Half cheese.” “Caesar salad.” Emboldened by the result, they peppered Viv with more commands: Add more toppings. Remove toppings. Change medium to large.”

  • 40 minutes later, a Pizz’a Chicago driver showed up with four made-to-order pizzas

  • Viv had confused the office address, but they addressed the issue

  • Engineers had ordered a pizza from start to finish, without placing a phone call, google search, or opening an app

  • Many in Silicon Valley believe this could be the next step in computing, and commerce itself

  • Kittlaus said “It’s about taking the way that humans have naturally interacted with each other for thousands of years and applying that to the way they interact with services”

Will the new shirts be sold trough a EU seller this time around? I was really disappointed when the WAN Hoddie was not sold through a EU seller and from what I read on the forum, the import fees for people in the EU was quite large.

I lost it at the Windows 10 Rant. The built in apps aren't supposed to be the best option, they are supposed to give limited functionality for people to have basic access to files and programs. If they are too good to not need anything else they have a history of getting fined for anti-competitive behavior. And the search. Same thing, there are lots of better search tools with more customization options.

It's a funny thing, but when you upgrade to windows 10, your old  apps still exist, like photoviewer, you just have to dig out the executable and associate it with photos. Even IE11 still exists on upgraded machines, its just hidden.

But yea, the new photos app is useless, the only thing it can be use for is to show off how fast an ssd is by just wheel spinning through thousands of photos.  The original app was useful for sorting pictures, hitting delete actually allowed you to delete a photo, fancy that.

The thing is, these aren't advanced features, they've actually taken basic functionality of the previous default apps and have broken them.  We aren't talking ms paint competing with photoshop, more suddenly turning ms paint into grey scale only, why?  Reasons....

The concern no longer applies anyways, the biggest targets for anti competitive complaints are the anti virus and firewall abilities now built into the os.  Expectations have changed, and people now expect these features as part of any consumer os.

Search is definitely broken, and there aren't enough parameters you can set to narrow down search results even with their default types like "kind:" etc, it seems to lack the ability to exclude types effectively.

As for Oculus, the permanent association with Facebook just kills it.

Just watch this

HOPE X (2014): You've Lost Privacy, Now They're Taking Anonymity - YouTube

the insidious nature of how facebook works behind your back is bad enough, but these days they've been overtly censoring content for governments and based on their own political agendas, certain groups for instance anti feminist groups face harsh sanctions  when others are treated with kid gloves.  Politicians like Angela Merkel are being aided by facebook to censor "hate speech" aka discussion of the migrant issue, and of course if facebook ever has a problem with your account, they will ask for your government ID to unlock it.  It's just a level of intrusiveness and abuse of power I just cannot support.

Scroll wheel for zooming or not is meh. Been using it as scrolling in Picasa with ctrl as a zoom modifier key for years. Though thankfully they did give you the option to pick between modes of scrolling/zooming.

Also still not upgrading to win 10 with win 7 support lasting till 2020 with how things stand.
