Upgrade Ideas, Please

My PC is about 2 years old, but my graphics card got fried recently so I upgraded it :D

Processor: Intel Core i5-3470 @ 3.2 GHz

RAM: Corsair Vengeance 4GB DDR3 @ 1600 MHz

Monitor: Samsung S19B150B 18.5 inch monitor

PSU: Thermaltake Litepower W0424 550W

Onboard Audio (I don't understand why people use audio cards, doesn't make sense to me at all)

Graphics Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 380 4GB NITRO Dual-X OC (Previously a lame Sapphire HD 6450)

Motherboard: Gigabyte B75M-HD3

Storage: 1TB Western Digital WDC WD10EZEX

I need opinions, can this build be improved? This is on a budget btw,

Yes, add an SSD for your boot drive. Or maybe also upgrade to a bigger monitor?

Also, we need pics. This is the *show* off your build thread. ;)

As for the audio card thing; it used to be that onboard audio was garbage and you needed a sound card to get good audio. Now it seems most boards within the last 3-4 years or so have more than adequate onboard audio for most people.

Sure! I'm not exactly a photographer, and the build isn't exactly new, so.. ._.

I'm a messy guy, so ignore the clutter, please xD

IMG_1854.jpg

IMG_1855.jpgYou can see the external 3TB hard drive in the middle, followed by my UPS and a 9 year old speaker. Hah, I'm surprised it still works well.

IMG_1860.jpgIMG_1863.jpgIMG_1868.jpg

Well, that was a bit image-heavy, I think xD

I think I need to get in some cable management, but I'm not sure how to start doing that.

Oh, and I need to upgrade my RAM too, it's kind of weird that my graphics card has the same amount of RAM as my entire PC.

PS: Mod/Admin/Whoever moved my post, I was planning to put pictures to show my build so I'd stay on topic, but it'd take me some time, so can you just move it back to the 'Show your build' thread, or if you think it's better to let this be a separate topic, I'm OK with that too :D

Hey OP. Just glossing over your specs, some easy upgrades that are quite cheap is an SSD (250gb+ recommended for an OS ... imo),an additional 4gb of memory if not a new kit of 8gb if you can't find the same model as the one you have. 4gb is OKAY but 8gb+ is better if you can (Chrome tabs, games with loads of textures, photo editing, etc.)

Thanks! I've realized this too, and was just talking about how my GPU had the same amount of VRAM as my PC had RAM, so I needed to upgrade it xD I'm not facing a lot of problems as of now regarding the speed, but it is noticeably slow when I have a lot of tabs on, or when I use Virtual Super Resolution and run at 1080p for some extra screen space. 1080p is really laggy on my computer, makes everything 10x slow :( So definitely thinking about upgrading RAM, and I've also found the same RAM stick that I already have, so it can be 8GB. The problem is, my motherboard has the theoretical max of 16GB RAM, so I won't have the ability to get crazy 64GB or 128GB RAM.

I do have one problem, and it's SSD ._. Like, why do you need it? I'm not a big fan of read/write speed, I'm fine if my PC takes a minute or two to boot up (as of now, its 45+ seconds), and worst of all, they have a seriously limited read/write cycle. I have to be careful about saving files on my SSD and how it will turn slow and become unusable as I continue using it ._. Not fun. I can do whatever I want on a normal HDD without worrying about it, and HDD's generally have a large read/write cycle that can make them last for decades.

Pretty decent stating place for some upgrades. Here is what I would add to make it even better in no particular order. I'll list the three top diorities at the bottom in order.

  • Add another 4gb stick of ram . Really cheap, easy upgrade that will yield better preformance and a better overall experience.
  • i would go ahead and replace that power supply ASAP. I have a very similar once that came with my case and it clapped out. Thermal take isn't the best and it is not 80plus rated, which is never a good sign. Maybe the EVGA 500B?
  • Pop in an SSD. Maybe a 250gb Samsung 850 Evo for some apps, games and the OS.
  • THat is a very small monitor. Maybe look at a 24" or preferably a 27" monitor.
  • your CPU platform is a little old but I reckon it's 100% fine.
  1. Ram
  2. monitor
  3. PSU
  4. SSD

Eh this is partially true. Some types of SSDs do slow down noticeably over time but are still faster than a HDD. Also, yes the value is not as good in terms of straight storage but there are many other benefits.

Just by looking at the unsleeved colored cables, it looks like an older, lower-end PSU. The components degrade over time and if it's not a higher-quality unit it should be replaced sooner than later.

Is the one you have now at least 80 plus rated? If not, you might want to consider getting one that's at least 80 plus bronze.

They also wear out faster than a HDD and are unstable right? I kind of like my data to be stable over time and I don't like losing my stuff as well. I almost cried the last time I had to reinstall Windows :/

  1. Ram
  2. monitor
  3. PSU
  4. SSD

Thanks! :D I'm definitely taking the RAM advice, a lot of people have recommended it. The PSU news is a bit disappointing, since it didn't come with my case at all and I just bought it recently.

What's wrong with a small monitor xD I've seen 10-inch screens, and 1080p might be a bit laggy, More res=Less FPS in games. And what do you mean by the CPU platform? The socket? Or the fan+heatsink?

Wow, how nice, I just recently bought the PSU, so I'm screwed, I guess

It's ok for what you have. There are far worse PSUs out there (probably like the one you replaced ;) ) I wouldn't worry about it for a while, it's fine. If you ever decide to do some more serious upgrades, like to a more powerful GPU or you want to get into overclocking, you will want something better. But again, for what you have right now, it's ok. ;)

I can tell from the fact that it is a dual +12v rail design at such low wattage, that it is a lower-end unit. But as long as you're careful with how many and what type of components you power with it, it should be ok. The R9 380 is a 190w TDP card and each of the 12v rails in that PSU is good for about 200w +/-, so your close to the edge. I would strongly suggest that you not try overclocking your GPU with this PSU.

Not especially. Any good SSD can be trusted. In fact, as I move my PC around i prefer solid state as it is less prone to issues related to movement and stuff. The 850 EVO I think i recommended is very reliable. Seriously don't worry about it.

Don't worry about the CPU. I'm just saying it's fine. And I don't know what you are talking about with 1080p. If you are happy with a small monitor go for it. That 380 will run everything at a nice smooth frame rate at 1080p. As long as it is over the refresh rate of the monitor it is fine.

Thanks! :D I'll take that advice, however, what would be the consequences of overclocking my GPU if my PSU can't deliver the wattage?

:D In that case, can you recommend me a large sized SSD that will last quite a while? I mean, I just don't want to worry about how my SSD's gonna fail if I keep writing too much stuff on it. :/

you cant go wrong with the 850 EVO. It comes from 120gb to a few terabytes.

I've heard of it :D You're sure it is durable right? I'll check it out

On another topic, I ran Cinebench 15 on my PC, I think I did quite well, but could've done better

If that PSU has good over draw protection, it will simply just shut down. That, or you might start getting black screens.

I had a bad PSU kill 2 GPUs on me just over a year ago. Killed my HD 7950 and the R9 290 I got to replace it before I realized it was the pour quality PSU. RMA'd both cards and replaced the PSU (was a cooler master GX650 - stay away from those, btw). So you can see why I'm a cautious person when it comes to PSUs. ;)
