getting 144hz to work on games?

vuther

Hi. I have a 1080p 144hz monitor Acer GN246HL and i recently went from my display port/DVI adpater cable to my dual link DVI-D to DVI-D cable. Windows is allowing me to set the refresh rate to 144hz in the display settings but BF4 and CS GO refuse to run at 144hz. For BF4 I have tried disabling V-sync and setting the max frames to 144 in the config file (and by using a console command). any suggestions?

Max frames might be set to 144 but if your system can't handle those frames you won't achieve them. A higher refresh rate monitor doesn't magically give you a better framerate.

Sorry i should have mentioned. i have a 980 TI and a 4790k at 4.8 Ghz. getting above 60 on BF4 shouldn't present any sort of issue.

Over 60 fps, yes, but it still doesn't magically just make your GPU faster by plugging in a more expensive monitor.

144hz monitors are no use if you can't run them :P

Be sure that:

You're using a Dual Link DVI or DisplayPort cable.

Your card can support 144Hz.

Windows is set to run at 144Hz (in the 'Advanced Settings' in the Display options).

The game is set to run at 144Hz.

After that there is no reason it should not work unless your monitor is not 144Hz or the panel is faulty, or something else is faulty.

Are you sure global vsync or some global cap isn't being applied by some program?

i need more info on both of these cables, it seems the issue might be here.

What info do you need? it's a dual link DVI-D cable. The adpater is what i was using before.

Not sure of any programs that would do this. Went into the nvidia control panel and couldn't find anything.

take a picture of the cable connector showing the pins. some monitors come with extremely shitty i mean low quality ones the Chinese knock offs work better sometimes . so you may have to buy a new cable if you do just get a DP cable much simpler

Are you using fraps or any frame counting/reporting software? If so, what is it reading; is it capped at a specific framerate or just not hitting 144hz? Try dropping your graphics settings to really low and see if you can get the framerates up and then report back.

try some really simple game not high end graphics i mean to see if it goes higher then 60 hz . if not you sometimes have a  option for 1920 x 1080 @ 30hz or 60hz or 144hz ect . i know on a few games you have to find the right one setting your desktop to 144hz is not perfect even thou that should be enough in the end to tell the game to run at your settings but its not alsways . run msi afterburner  in the background since it will chart the fps for you if you dont have a overlay of some type on

It is capped at 60. i tried putting the resolution scale down to 25% and it had no effect

It dousen't work in CS go and that's pretty low on the graphics spectrum. i set the resolution in BF4 to 1920-1080 144hz. i am using the steam FPS overlay and the Geforce FPS overlay

ok disable one of the overlays it shouldn't matter but try it . i would remove the steam one .  if the game wont budge past 60hz/ fps mark with the fps indicator on . watch the number if it hovers at 55-59 to 60fps then something is wrong no v sync in game or in nvida control panel.  then its either the cable or the monitor , which i would return if thats the case . my 4k monitor i got awhile ago had ultra shitty cables i mean bad but i went into it knowing the bundled cables weren't usable .

i looked around their are complaints about 144hz you got  not working but mostly the monitor doesnt work at all then . if you end up returning or exchangeing the one you got here is the same thing different brand

Ok so it turns out that there was a 60 FPS limit in Rivatuner. I don't even remember setting that up but it's fixed now. Thanks for all the help guys.
