Can HQ processors be Overclocked?

Hi, Im helping a friend buy a laptop under 1500 and most of the choices I am finding have either an i7-4720HQ or an i7-6700HQ processor. Can these be overclocked from thier 2.6 ghz base speed? Or use some Intel software to do it? Thanks

It will have a turbo boost when under load increasing speeds.
I can't imagine pushing a laptop cpu much further for heating issues.

Yes, but they won't hold their clock speed very well.

Here's a recent guide to mobile intel cpus, mostly about i7s but it covers from Sandy to Skylake.

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

Possibly might be able to overclock the Haswell ones such as

But as already mentioned you need decent cooling and power delivery for Haswell and consider that some laptops are not able to do that at stock clocks even.

Don't know if the i7-6700HQ can be bclk OC'd similar to it's desktop brother but given the loss of power management this probably would be a bad idea in most laptops especially given the lack of the thermal throttling feature allowing core temperatures to go to 125°C or more.

Skylake uses a fair bit less power clock for clock than Haswell so has that in it's favor. There is the 6820HK which is the unlocked mobile version and can go to 4.1GHz in a few systems but although it shares the same Intel tray price as the i7-6700HQ, is likely better binned, has TSX-NI and has more cache it's probably only going to be offered in the more expensive laptops.

Be aware that a few of the manufacturers such as HP and Dell ship their i7-6700HQ laptops with DDR3L memory instead of DDR4.

I have a 4720HQ which is functionally a haswell 6700HQ and it turbos to 3.6GHz (3.3 on all cores), and it's usually enough. I don;t know in particularly why you would or even should overclock a laptop though

R.I.P. Asus X99-A motherboard, April 2016 - October 2018, may you rest in peace. 5820K, if I ever buy you a new board, it'll be a good one.

I use Intel Extreme Utility tool and get +200MHz on all cores on my 4700HQ.

So the turbo max is now 3.6GHz. I would give my right arm to get to 4GHz on this CPU!

Usually HQ Processor are worth on Mid-range laptop like the MSI GT72VR Dominator Pro has i7 6700hq that turbo speed to 3.6GHz.Unless If you clock it higher, go to UEFI or Intel Extreme Utility. That is my opinion.

By the way, I'm still waiting for the MSI GE70 2OE with Intel Core i5 4200M and GTX 765M. Is it possible to overclock?
