CPU pins

I noticed some CPUs have pins on the top side of the cpu, or at least exposed gold points. What are they for?

Can you give us an example? I know that AMD has its pins for the CPU on the chip/PCB itself, where as Intel has their in the socket.

 

AMD on top, Intel on the bottom.

I think he's referring to the exposed gold points on the cpu, for ex. a 4770k

I believe those are used for what @ZetZet said, testing during manufacturing

I was referring to the points that appear toward the top section of the CPU in the image shown.
