how about a PC that a size of a smartphone. A smartphone SOC with enough RAM would be enough for most stuff ( doc, multimedia, web browsing, etch) of course after connecting it to a monitor a keyboard and a mouse, basically a continuum but with x86 and all of its glory.

That still requires external peripherals in the form of a monitor and kb/m though. But working with just the phone itself, meaning the touchscreen? No. That's just for when you have to quickly reply to emails while stuck in traffic or something.

Would make sense, though. Microsoft is pushing for the "plug your phone into any screen, now it's your PC" space, so the phone would need respectable drive space, and 256GB is what I'd call the bare minimum of where that starts.

I can't wait to see what this phone's like. I've often said that I'd love to own a Windows phone, but the less than stellar app selection and the interface just isn't what I enjoy.

The fact that it might have a stylus is what really interest me. Hopefully it's as useful as the one in the Note series.

I think some of us just simply don't need a removable battery. Most, in fact. You would definitely be in the minority. I've owned phones with both, and honestly I've never had to hot swap a battery, and I've never used a phone for more than 2 years, so it's well within the usable recharge cycles that the battery provides.

 

My Note5 lasts from 5am to 11pm, with about 5 hours of on screen time. If I'm on my phone more than that, I need more of a life.

It wasn't that bad. I considered buying one. Considering it was their first real effort to bust into the higher end market I'd say it was extremely well done, and I can't wait to see what the Zenfone 3 brings. Their generation to generation improvements are generally huge.

They also helped push down the cost of a lot of other devices.

Depends entirely what you do for work. Take an insurance adjuster for example. There's software that runs on Windows tablets that could easily run on a Windows phone.

Don't consider "productive at work" to only mean video editing.

Depends entirely what you do for work. Take an insurance adjuster for example. There's software that runs on Windows tablets that could easily run on a Windows phone.

Ok that's one case. Scientists in the middle of a fucking volcanic island trying to record data, score another point. Everyone else can get a fucking laptop or ultrabook, even a tablet would be preferable just because its a lot easier to click.

Trust companies taking inventory of a house is another example. But really there's many, many more jobs that would benefit from an all in one device.

Also consider company costs. Sure, you can get a tablet, but if you can get a phone with a decent sized screen that can take on it's tasks as well as providing the employee with a phone (and many other things, especially if you provide them with one anyway) then in the end the cost savings can be massive.

 

We're already seeing things like this in the retail space. They're combining the phone system as well as the RF scanners into a single, phone like device.

That... Actually looks pretty cool. I've been die hard iPhone since the original, but a slick small phone that can plug into a monitor and become a proper pc is an amazing proposition.

Again you're being disingenuous here: yes this devices have their very practical uses. When you use a corporate buzz word like "ultimate productivity" however you're not really talking about fucking warehouse clerks doing inventory, you're talking 9 to 5 er Data Management guys like me along with other office based jobs.

Windows phone is such a weird and unfortunate dichotomy.  There's the phone (ARM) space that is so deficient of apps compared to the competition that they're just barely scraping by, but then there's desktop windows which has probably more programs than every other OS combined, if I were to guess.  If they could just get x86 into phones and run full, real windows, this issue would be solved and I feel like they would quickly steal a decent portion of the market.  WHY MICROSOFT!?  Y U NO listen!?

Well Microsoft doesn't have that problem yet because A) they have Micro SD Card expansion and B) Not many apps take more than 500Mb

As awesome as that would be, it's extremely unlikely to happen.

 

First, it would have to be a custom SoC, because AMD doesn't produce one with a TDP low enough for smartphones and won't do so either.

 

And second, it's uncertain if a Zen/Polaris APU could scale that low and deliver on performance as well.

 

Third, there's a lot more to smartphone SoC design than mere CPU and GPU components. You want to integrate as much as possible, which would require tons of R&D and access to more IP. They would want to integrate an LTE modem for one thing but even Intel failed to do so (if I recall correctly) before they canceled their smartphone endeavors.

Maybe if Microsoft paid for much of the costs etc but Microsoft is generally more inclined to partner with Intel as well (excluding the Xbox of course) 

 

So I just don't see it happening. 

 

In the end, any Surface Phone will be running Snapdragons, anything else is not feasible. X86 is dead on smartphones and Microsoft has renewed their commitment to ARM.
