Shocking Breakthrough: Western Canadian Internet slower than average

So apparently we're not doing so well compared to the rest of Canada in terms of download speed.  We're not doing so well compared to the rest of the world either, but that was hardly a surprise - most of the world is not doing well compared to the rest of the world it seems :D

The results showed a Canada-wide average download speed of 18.64 megabits per second. That's fast enough to download a 5GB HD movie in 36 minutes. It's considerably faster than the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission's broadband speed target of 5 megabits per second, but slower than the U.S. Federal Communications Commission's target of 25 megabits per second.

Wow, so we're not up to bare minimum standards of acceptable speed?

Honestly sometimes the things they do studies for are just stupid, but at least this one found accurate results that might actually get something done about it... Unlike that story about how people want thinner phones not more battery... :dry:

I'm guessing the Vancouver BC average is so high compared to it's surroundings just because Linus' HQ is there... damn you LMG and your gigabit!

Honestly he does probably raise the average xD

But actually according to the article they sampled a bunch of different points, but point being, unless any specific person was one of them, I don't think they would influence the results

That is hard to believe.    

 

I don't use AT&T for home internet, but I do use their cellular service and depending on signal, I can get 80 to 100 Mb/sec through my cell phone.  I was actually using my mobile data to run my house while we waited on a FiOS install.

I only get like 2 bars max at my house and crazy packet loss if I try to use any UDP services.

As mentioned, they've since upgraded to Synchronous 1Gbps Up and Down.

 

OT: Yep, Canadian Internet sucks. The "minimum acceptable" standard of 5 Mbps set by the CRTC in my opinion is outdated already. The minimum should be 15 Mbps or 20 Mbps.

 

And here I'm sitting in urban Ontario with 150/10 Mbps...
