Australian NBN/FTTP/FTTN

snortings

Hi,

As a fellow Australian, I am quite confused with this whole NBN ordeal.

After looking around, I havent had any luck.

What I have gathered is:

  • FTTP is no longer rolling out due to Turnbull.
  • FTTN is being introduced as a 'cost saving' measure.

Everywhere I have looked I have found that FTTP gives you 100/40. Such as on like TPG's or Telstras website, it says you can purchase different plans. But those plans are they FTTP or FTTN? Is it possible to get 100/40 on FTTN? Or are we stuck with 25/1 or 25/5?

Cheers.

Give up on NBN. Get copper. I have it and I get 100 down, well so my plan says. Usually around 20-30 down. Upload is crap at 1.5 but eh. NBN is just a waste of time.

The NBN is not going well thanks to the political squabbling over it. At least we don't have Tony Abbot in charge of it any more who thinks that the only reason anyone would want a faster Internet connection is to view more porn.

I suggest looking through whirlpool.net.au the guys on that forum are a bit rude but they know the NBN as well as older services in Australia better than anyone.

they're rolling out all fttp, fttn and hth. Though fftp is scarce, they have picked up the ball a bit in terms of rolling it out.

They've also updated they're rollout plan earlier this year and i've noticed a few areas have gone 'under development' as scheduled. I'm supposedly meant to expect hth at the end of this year. Not entirely sure what hth is but know it's the lesser of the three. Sure it's better then my current 1-5mb dl & ul.

The comment about whirlpool is something you definitely want to check out. Where i've done a lot of my digging. Plenty of articles with comments from what seems to be well informed individuals on the internet too.

I dunno about hth, but I believe my area is scheduled to receive hfc some time in the distant future (if ever lol). Its basically cable but its better than my 2.8/0.6 d/u on adsl lol.

I'm holding out hope that because construction doesn't start here till Q3 '17 there's a change in government at the election in July and the NBN gets changed back to FTTP, but hope is fading. Politician should be required to have a doctorate in computer science.

Your speed depends on the distance to the node. You have to be pretty damn close to get your full 100mbps. If you are more than 500m away from the node, your speed goes down on whats called a 'ski hill' (or so I've learnt). If you only get 20-30 down, it is due to your distance from the node (unless you're really close and you get that, might be the copper in your house). If you only get 20-30 down, just downgrade. No point in paying for 100/40 if you only get 20-30mbps down. "Get copper" - FTTN is using the Copper in your house, which essentially makes it cheaper for the government, as if we all got FTTH/FTTP we would see everyone's street and yard dug up to put the fibre in.

I hope the change in government happens, and all the places that currently don't have NBN, get FTTP whilst everyone else is stuck with FTTN :P

The funny/worst thing is New Zealand copied the original Australian NBN design for our UFB roll out, and I do mean literally copied as it was referenced in the planning and design documents. The difference is we stuck with it along with augmenting the design a little for very small towns were VDSL was deployed instead but at distances to get a minimum of 30Mbps/5Mbps and up to 70Mbps/10Mbps.

Most places have fibre plans that go up to 200Mbps/200Mbps unlimited at around $90 NZD, less for lower plans. Dunedin also won the rights to get 1Gbps deployment first which is already rolled out and been in use for a while with long term plans to deploy this to the rest of the country.

There are cheap ways to deploy fibre, priority order is use existing ducting if possible followed buy exterior rugged cables fixed to secure fences and concrete edging while the last option and they hate doing it due to cost is drilling/thrusting and trenching. It is more than likely that if Australia done this from the start FTTP/FTTH would have been completed as normal, we changed to this model half way through once projected cost showed always drilling/thrusting would only do half the country at best.

When I heard that the Australian NBN was going to radically changed and also saw the quoted 25Mbps/5Mbps that was a clear sign that you all were getting majorly screwed and is something that is so costly to fix even after many years that you will have to suffer for a significant length of time. Over here we know the felling well, we used to be much worse off and even envied Australia's internet connections but that certainly is not the case anymore.

Know them feels - I've got 100/40 FTTP here (soon to be 100/100) and most of my family in Auclkand all have 200/200 :(

Cooper is 20-30 during peak times. At night it does reach 100 occasionally. Just optus is rebbish lol. Also copper doesn't matter too much about distance from the node, that's ADSL. ADSL takes a harder hit with speeds and ping.

Was having a read around and I saw if Labor win the election, apparently they will stop the rollout of FTTN and go to FTTP. So hopefully Labor wins :P

I still don't have NBN in my area, no one can tell me a date. Starting to get annoyed :\

FTTN uses the copper. Copper is outdated. The further you are from the node the slower speeds you will get.

What state are you in? Does Skymesh still rollout FTTP? Or do they just do FTTN?

Skymesh don't do the roll out - that's NBNCo, Skymesh simply buy off NBNCo. Benefit is SM only touch NBNCo, no one else so their pricing and more importantly service is much better. I'm down in SE Melbourne however Skymesh isn't currently availible here (2 months or so)
