Microsoft clearing Lumia Stock in preparation for next generation Windows phones

AlTech

Microsoft is clearing their inventory of Lumia smartphones as they are now in the final stages of a rebranding attempt. They are getting rid of Lumia branded phones as fast as freaking possible.

An internal Microsoft email confirms that they are working on next generation windows devices.

These devices are likely to be high end and if not then mid range and high end.

This is how well Lumias have been selling courtesy of Nokia and Microsoft.

nokia.PNG

Because of this, Microsoft wants to rebrand. They want to kill the "Lumia" brand and introduce the world to "Surface Phones". The most productive phones on the planet.

AND Here's what Microsoft had to say in their internal email

Quote

I understand that you are hearing concerns from certain partners about Microsoft's commitment to the mobile space.

Let me be very clear: We are committed to deliver Windows 10 on mobile devices with small screen running ARM processors.

We are currently in development of our next generation products and I wanted to reconfirm our commitment to Windows 10 Mobile. We believe in this product's value to business customers and it is our intention to support the Windows 10 Mobile platform for many years. We have a device roadmap to support that from Microsoft as well as our OEM partners who will also be selling an expanded lineup of phone devices based on this platform.

.

So they're probably not gonna use x86 then to emulate Windows 10 Desktop

Welp. What are they gonna use? Snapdragon 830?

Well at least everybody will know what Windows Phones are now. If I show people my phone I have to explain that it is a Windows Phone. Now people will know the truth............... and devs will take it more seriously as a platform.

@GoodBytes This is the end of Lumia and the beginning of a new era. The surface Phone era.

I'm personally happy with my 950XL. They just need to fix the OS first before putting out new phone as the current flagship lumias has so much processing power but imo not fully utilised.

I really don't understand what Microsoft think they will achieve with rebranding their phones.

It's not like changing the name will fix any of the issues people have with Windows Phone 10 (mainly third party support).

Using x86, allowing all the win32 programs to work would have been a great USP, but that won't work if they keep using ARM.

The fact its called "Surface" makes you think of X86 support like a "phone" version of the tablet

but I agree, if its just running Windows Mobile 10 on ARM, then it wont fix anything, people might go "ooh new phones" then when they realise it runs the same old OS it will just go down like a popped balloon

As good as they can make a phone, its irrelevant if the software people want, the apps, games, camera stuff that 99% of users want is not there on the phone

They're trying to get Devs on board but simple stupid stuff like not having the latest game everyone's playing (at my school right now it's "Rolling Sky") is terrible and would discourage many customers who would otherwise look at android or IOS.

It could still have x86 but it's clear ARM isn't going anywhere in Windows 10 Mobile.

The whole point of Windows 10 for Phones was the Windows 10 FOR Phones. They are branding it as an edition of Windows 10 as opposed to a different OS. This is a psycological thing that will make developers more happy to develop for Windows 10.

How about 8Gb RAM and Snapdragon 830 :D?  Coming from 1GB RAM and Snapdragon 400 that would be super awesome.

The rebranding is to fix the consumer perception. If more consumers bought Windows Phones then more developers would develop for it and thus fix the apps and games issue.

But even then Microsoft needs to fix their drivers cos WIndows 10 Mobile drivers are shitty. Even Android has better graphics drivers than Windows 10 Mobile.

Well, honestly, a rebranding isn't going to do anything at all for them in that regard.

It may also fix developer perception. Cos right now If i didn't know any better and I was the average consumer I would never have heard of Windows Phone.

Sure, since then I've watched some TV shows and they had Microsoft sponsorship deals to use Lumias and Surface devices.

But outside of that Microsoft needs a new product to market to developers and consumers. I think that many developers genuinely don't know about Windows Phones.

Well, I’d agree with the others in saying it’s not really going to make much of a difference. What’s in a name, really?

You'd be surprised. Marketing people use new names all the time to continue selling old products which are almost the same.

Its all about public perception and associating things with a product. a brand.

People associate iPhones and premium build quality. It means that people who know about iPhones might be more willing to buy iPhones than Androids or Windows Phones.

Not necessarily. It can also stem from product placement/sponsorship

If Christiano Ronaldo wore Nike trainers people would go "Cool, if Ronaldo is wearing these trainers then they must be good and I want one".

As to the argument for windows phone - I don't use any interesting apps and having direct windows compatibility is nice for a windows user. And I like the Lumia camera's. Consistently rather nice.

Depends how much the "windows" comparability goes, so far nothing particularly interesting as far as cross comparability goes

Its still annoying when you just cant get an App that you want, be it a photography app/editing, a fun new game, or just things that are missing completley that shouldnt be - its getting better but its still bad

obviously, if you dont need them, and you know that, then its great, but from a consumer stand point, its tough to buy into a system that has an underdeveloped eco system, and not knowing in the future what will be there or not

But would you buy a Surface Phone simply because you saw Paul Walker using one… :P

That’s more what I was getting at. It makes much less sense with tech than it does with… apparel. Apart from sizing things properly, consumer perception (and hence branding) is pretty much all there is.

Maybe, especially since he would have risen from the dead lol

I agree, with tech, it makes less sense, but tech and fashion do have SOME amounts of cross over

Like half of the reason I have an iPhone is because of its look and feel...

Im like 50:50 tech/lifestyle, it has to tick the boxes and my requirements, but I would pay extra for the status/styling etc

(I hope that makes sense)

Also, if everyone sees celebrities using a particular phone, lets say, a samsung phone, like its all over TV, all their favourite artists use it, their favourite movie starts, it might make them keenly aware that it is trusted and desireable device

I mean to the average consumer they might think " why would a millionaire choose "that" phone when they could have any phone, it must be good?"

Advertising and brand perception are powerful, and if powerful, rich and famous people use a particular device, more people will follow as they will have the perception that it must be a good device
