What PSU do you have? The r9 390 consumes more power so if you are running a poor quality PSU the gtx 970 will be a better fit.

390 because of the directx12 support and full 8gb of vram plus the card is more powerful than the 970, the only reason why the 970 gets more fps is because of drivers and game optimizations

ok well i guess im going for the 390 lol xD . Now i know what gpu im going for any idea on the model, i.e EVGA or MSI. 

i see so many going between £200-£300, is there a sizeable difference?

I'd get the sapphire 390. Not really a sizable difference except avoid Asus and Gigabyte 390s. Asus for its very poor VRM cooling and mediocre core cooling and Gigabyte for its locked voltage.

550 watts is plenty, though some might say 650 is safer. Honestly though, you're good.

just wanted to be sure you went with the 390. I guess.

Generally no. They all have 8GB of GDDR5 at the same bandwidth and using the same everything pretty much. One might be stay cooler than another that's really it.

As far as brands go I suggest Sapphire, XFX and MSI.

You could go with a 390 sure or if you want to run Minesweeper on maximum settings slap a Rage II or even a Rage Pro in there if you got the cash.
