Canadian Bandwidth caps “A Human Rights Violation” Says Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos

http://gigaom.com/2012/09/13/netflix-canada-caps-human-rights-violation/

“It’s almost a human rights violation what they’re charging for internet access in Canada”

referring to low broadband caps in place at Canadian ISPs that can start at just 15 GB.

Hastings had initially said that he didn’t anticipate the caps to be a problem the company eventually adjusted its streaming rates in the country, making non-HD streams the default option for Canadian users

Said Sarandos: “The problem in Canada is… they have almost third-world access to the internet.”

Cyanogen Raises 7 Million to build an the best version of Android

http://www.theverge.com/2013/9/18/4742828/cyanogen-raises-7-million-to-build-the-best-version-of-android

it has raised $7 million from Benchmark Capital and Redpoint Ventures

Surprising due to 23 step install process with many risks…

Cyanogen brings the latest version of Android to phones that carriers have long abandoned

may pick a more consumer-friendly name; Cyanogen is considering re-branding itself next year

The company’s vision is to use Android as the foundation for an operating system more focused on productivity than commerce

two key efforts to expand the firmware’s reach:

     a one-click installer for Windows

a partnership deal with a hardware manufacturer, which the company plans to announce in the next week

"The mobile devices out there, they’re just not meant for anybody to use," Kondik(Steve Kondik, the main guy behind Cyanogen) says. "They’re essentially mobile cash registers. We want to help you get stuff done, and use these things to their fullest potential."

Google has not commented yet at all

No comment has been made on how they will make any money, although they did say "If you’re the default OS on a device and you have 50 million users, there are a lot of ways to make money"

"There’s a lot you can do," he says, "whenever you listen to your users on what they want."

oppo! Cyanogen released a video which fairly clearly says its oppo

Cyanogen AMA! Check it out, awesome unannounced stuff

Damages at Hynix dram plant quite serious

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/56576-damages-at-sk-hynix-dram-plant-more-serious-than-expected/

Not on the same scale as the hard drive craziness

Luckily the plant makes use of a special "Gemini" architecture where clean rooms and other facilities operate independently so a certain percentage of the total production capacity can still operate.

Clean up procedures, examination of clean rooms and machinery and reconfiguration of manufacturing settings are expected to limit the number of wafers produced for the next two months at roughly 260,000 worth of wafer production.

ADATA showed off a picture of 32gb ddr4! Not really...

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/56754-adata-showed-off-a-picture-of-its-single-module-32gb-ddr4/

Confusing wording

Actually DDR3L - DDR3 Low Voltage

32GB on a single module(STOP HERE) and thats not all(NOW MOVING AWAY FROM DDR3L ONCE WE’RE ON DDR4) we will see modules with up to 128GB in the near future. DDR4 is here!

Nintendo legend Hiroshi Yamauchi has passed away.

http://theweek.com/article/index/249931/how-nintendo-legend-hiroshi-yamauchi-changed-video-games-forever

Yamauchi took over Nintendo making playing cards since 1889 his grandfather died in 1949

Nintendo expanded into several other areas: Noodles, toy blocks, a taxi service, and even a "love hotel."

It was in 1977 that he finally ventured into the video game industry.

His best decision might have been hiring game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, the man responsible for creating characters such as Donkey Kong, Mario, and Zelda.

He finally stepped down as president in 2002. By then, he was one of the richest men in Japan, and also owner of the Seattle Mariners (which he sold in 2004).

As The Verge's Aaron Souppouris put it, "The NES was a huge risk for Nintendo" but was eventually credited "as the catalyst for the rebirth of the video game industry."

Tesla Model S Autopilot

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/57453-teslas-autopilot-car-project/

The CEO says Tesla's setup uses "360 degree flush mounted cameras + radar" with software and hardware level image processing to put all the information together.

Mercedes, GM, Volvo and Continental - have projects for either full or partial car self-control - still under development for reasons both technical and legal.

Also hanging in the balance is Google's autonomous car project, although from Musk's statements it appears Tesla has decided to go its own way on the technology.
