I think people get a little blinded by the ease of trying to point to cars or guns and licensing. You do not need a license to own or drive a car, you need a license to operate a car on public roads. To own it and keep it and drive it on private property the government has no say. With a gun you need no license to purchase, own, or carry a gun on private property, you need a license to do so publicly.

 

In the end property rights have to be the trump card in dealing with all of these issues. Hold drone owners responsible for their activities and respect private property owners rights in disallowing incursions over their property. Licenses and prison time fix nothing. You need a foundational, ground up, understanding and expectation of respect for property rights. 

 

The real fear should be of those using these instances to practice truly malicious acts.

Cuz if you were european you would know how strict the driving license requirements are.... its not just a simple test, you need hours of schooling. Mandatory schooling.

I am not american, and you used the word "ban" as opposed to "regulate".

 

And from this comment I could make the hypothesis that you don't have a driver's license, because if you did you'd know there are all kinds of people who can get one and still absolutely suck at driving.

Of course they are, but so are a lot of things besides cars, and guns.


Tbh cars are fine because most people don't intend on hurting people with their car. People buy a gun with the intent of possibly needing to hurt someone though justify it because that someone was trying to hurt them.

Drones, I'm not sure why someone would want a drone other than for Arial photography. 

 

They certainly don't buy drones to harm others. It's just a hobby.

@Prysin Well I mean because of how spaced out things are in the US (a lot things aren't in walking or biking distance) cars are important. So I mean that's sort of part of why our rules on getting a driving license is more relaxed than most European countries. 


At least in Minnesota we have a GDL which basically means you don't start off with a full license (at least as a teenager). I have a Instruction Permit, it grants me the ability to drive as long as there is an adult with a valid license beside me. I had to go through 30 hours of classroom instruction and then I have to complete 8 hours of behind the wheel instruction and then 50 hours of supervised driving and 15 of those 50 hours have to be night time driving.

Lets get this straight, in most of the world, you will never have an effective ban on drones/rc anything. The stuff is too easy to find/make/already everywhere. It's not rocket science to put together either. Also the legal work would be an absolute bitch considering there is a very well established RC model-aircraft industry that would suffer needlessly. Plus a substantial amount of the aviation industry likes drones/rc. I haven't heard anyone who does anything to do with actually flying (pilots, aircraft maintenance, etc.) argue for anything of the sort (i.e. bans or stupidly restrictive laws/regulations). Most agree that more 'reach out' programs to educate the public would be apt. Airspace restrictions around airports is also one I've heard a good bit. Do that with some public outreach and soon it'll be common knowledge around the drone market.

 

The only thing except the above I can think of that would work would be 'turrets' that can kill the electrical systems on these so noobs can't f*ck sh*t up. Small enough they don't pose a risk to the real aircraft, big enough that any typical rc/drone would get fried.

 

Then again since when are those in charge of legislature even remotely reasonable these days.

Quick thoughts on system: I7 is extremely quick and I'm glad I spent the extra for hyper-threading. I regret my decision to get the GTX 970, it has horrible coil whine. There isn't any excuse for this terrible whine I and others are having. I HIGHLY recommend a 144hz monitor. Future Improvements/upgrades: Rubber fan mounts, basic speakers, more ram (for a total of 16gb), replace GPU.

144hz is love. 144hz is life. I like to submit unfinished posts then do about 20 edits. I like the Night Theme too.

Of the two, the car is much more likely to have the desired effect in that case. Heck, if I wanted to hurt someone I'd get a club, why spend 1000 bucks on a drone that can perhaps hope of falling on the right spot from a certain height.

Firing off an EMP in an airport would make the drone the least of your problems :P

emp is indiscriminate so it will probably also knock out electronics that are nearby

a net gun or something will probably be a better option

There you go. They hover and are usually larger then drones, pro ones. I have also heard more people dying from RC helicopter then drones. Mostly giant gas powered ones that decapitate the person

It's actually a possibility not a certainty.  It's not confirmed yet. So, this post is kinda misleading, but I don't blame the OP since BBC did make it sound like it happened (Really BBC? We have gotten to this level?).

 

EDIT: In case anyone wants more evidence, here a quote from the article itself:

Putting drones in the hands of every idiots out there was a bad idea to begin with. I believe drones should be registered to their users, so they can be traced back if they cause any problem, especially the ones with cameras that can be controller remotely from a long distance, or set on an auto pilot. As it is now, if someone flies a drone into an airplane, above a prison or any prohibited area, it's very hard to find the owner.

Now the ones that basically cannot really go long distance away from their owners or just plain follow their owners around, I have no problem with that.

When I had my rc plane phase I talked to a pilot in the  raf who flew heli's, and while I was young at the time (maybe around 12) so i may not have heard the sarcasm if it was there,  he was positive rc heli's are harder to fly than actual war copters.

Quick thoughts on system: I7 is extremely quick and I'm glad I spent the extra for hyper-threading. I regret my decision to get the GTX 970, it has horrible coil whine. There isn't any excuse for this terrible whine I and others are having. I HIGHLY recommend a 144hz monitor. Future Improvements/upgrades: Rubber fan mounts, basic speakers, more ram (for a total of 16gb), replace GPU.

144hz is love. 144hz is life. I like to submit unfinished posts then do about 20 edits. I like the Night Theme too.

Well this ass hole ruined it for every one. Why in a blue hell did he fly a drone any where around a freaking airport. Well I can see the wheels turning in Washington. I wonder which Congressman Will start the crusade against private drone ownership. There is always this one ass hole who ruins it though. Now I dont own any drones. I dont own any because I live near Detroit Metro Airport. Hell my sister lives in the flight path for when they come in to land. If you know there is an airport near, then maybe you can fly your drone else where. Not endanger the lives of thousands. Keep in mind an airplane falling from the sky near an airport will kill the occupants on the plane as well as those on the ground. This is part of the reason I supported Drone registration. So the goverment could find these idiots and through them in prison for stupidity. 

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

yeah, they probably staged it. They wanted drone laws in place like yesterday, and needed an incident to make it happen.

At least in Minnesota we have a GDL which basically means you don't start off with a full license (at least as a teenager). One would think there would be a law on what distance from the airport is prohibited zone for any flying unauthorized object.

 

This incident shouldn't affect people flying drones reasonably in public areas (parks, beaches, leisure curts, towns etc.).
