PSU Tier's & Rankings Ver. 2.0

ddbtkd456

I originally made one of these posts but then decided to deleted it since it was a repost by someone else. So the point of this topic is to refer people here so they know what kind of PSU is better then the others. I would argue that the signally most important component in your whole computer system is you power supply. Why? Simply put if your power supply is not up to pair it can end up looking like this, or shortly stated it can fry your whole pc along with every single component it is plugged into. Not to worry tho stick to this list and you'll be good to go on that part. So below are some links that might help if you want to take a look at them as well.

  1. Finding the Right PSU - Credit to @Windspeed36
  2. Explanation of 80 Plus Efficiency - Credit to @STRMfrmXMN
  3. The Original PSU Tier Guide - Credit to @Aniallation
  4. Wattage Guide to System Build - Credit to @Aniallation

So what makes an excellent power supply unit? There are a couple of different factors that go into making a quality power supply:

  1. Components - The higher the quality of the components within the power supply, the more stable it will be. In turn this will be an important fact since this determines how long your power supply and your components of the computer will last overall. The lower the quality of the components within the power supply the more it will negatively impact not only your power supply, but the components its providing power to as well. Don't skimp out if it can be helped.
  2. Stability - The more stable a power supply is the more efficiently it will run. This is determined by ripples caused when a power supply is pushed in both wattage and amps. The less ripples it has when stressed the more stable it is, a poorly stable power supply will shut down when stressed and should be avoided at all costs. These unstable power supplies are a danger to not only your components, but also to the builder.
  3. Efficiency - The more efficient the power supply is the more money you will save, the link above will describe it more in depth.
  4. Safety - This is probably one of the most important things when it comes to judging a power supply. The safety is determined by making sure the power supply does not short circuit or cause unnecessary or serious harm to the components it is powering. Be sure to take notice of the over-temperature protection and make sure it is capable of having the correct safety switched that you are looking for. Stay away fom those power supplies that don't have any safety switches as this will not just ultimately affect you, but maybe the others around you.

As stated before all the power supplies before is based on professional unbiased reviews. If you don't see your power supply below or its not listed, then it may be discontinued.

Tier One:
The highest quality and most stable Power Supply Units available. Protected by industrial grade protection circuitry and can output wattage at a rated maximum temperature of 50°C or below. These units are also Haswell certified, meaning they can cope with the C6 and C7 sleep states of 0.05Amps without triggering the under-current protection switch. May even go over labelled wattage and still work until it safely shuts down.

Tier Five (
Avoid IMMEDIATELY):

These units are highly unsafe to use. No such protections added, very thin gauge wiring used, false advertising and too much to list. Reference to a higher tiered unit for a better, money saving and a much safer unit. For your safety's sake, please don't order or pick one up for use in your system. These units are a potential fire hazard and could even kill you, let alone your system.

Lots of good stuff! I'd format it so it takes up less of the page but it's pretty solid.

Haha I threw your guide in there at the beginning, I read over all 4 and thought those 4 really stuck out. Nice job. Also I would like to make a table of somesort is there a way to do that?

  • Like this
  • With the dots?
  1. Numbered lists are also an option
  2. But I don't think these are what you're after.

You can insert an image from a URL with a table you've created but I think that's it.

As @quan289 said, at least credit the author 'dottorrent' since 90% of the OP is actually his list.

'Fanboyism is stupid' - someone on this forum.

Be nice to each other boys and girls. And don't cheap out on a power supply.

Another one..? Whatever...

One thing though. Are you dottorrent?

Because this is exact copy and paste of Tomshardware 2.0 tier list. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html

Edit: Sorry, just deleted the quote, as spoiler didn't want to work properly.

Um. The actually teirs are a not a direct copy, yes I used his as a reference with my wording and different formatting of the tiers, also he wasn't the only one to post that. If you read his post carefully it was posted on April 16, when the list was made in Feb 16.

If you've previously won the build off please pm me so we can get something worked out.

Ok, you probably added 5% of work into it, but the rest is the work of Dottorrent and the community of Tomshardware. After all, most, if not all, placement of units are place in the same manner as the one you posted. For example, Dottorent would generalize the HXi and RMi series as a whole as tier one, but why only the RM1000x is listed? The RMx is based on the same platform as the RMi - minus Corsair Link, switchable single / multi-rail, and the usage of a rifle bearing fan. You did the same.

This is just blatant plagiarism. I mean did you even asked permission to used their work?

Also, it was UPDATED on February 16 - not posted. Of course, it going to be updated when new units and reviews shows up. That list had been up for over a year now.
