Im a bit new to this and just want to make sure.

Do I have to stick with whats on the approved vendor list when choosing memory?

More than likely the motherboard manufacturers website.

@OP So if it is, that just means they've tested the board for compatibility with those chips. Generally you can take the requirements for your board eg DDR3 1600-2400 and purchase accordingly.

I would think he is talking about the memory QVL (Qualified Vendor List). Usually put out by the MOBO manufacturer.

Memory being on that list just means it has been tested and found to work ok. but, as windspeed36 said, other memory (of the correct spec)may(should) work.
