10A Variac and 64v Transformer. What should I blow up next?

iamdarkyoshi

Sorry, but I guess I am advertising my youtube channel here. I (think) ads are disabled, so I should not be making any money from the views.

Anyway I had a fair amount of fun blowing up this old fan:

It seemed to me like one or more of the transistors inside the controller chip shorted which caused that coil to get stuck in a powered state, and made it so the fan could not continue to rotate on its own. After this, I raised it up further and it started arcing, releasing...

THE MAGIC BLUE SMOKE.

Here was the aftermath:

Which begs the question, with a supply that should theoretically be able to deliver ~64v DC at 20A, what should I blow up next?

I vote for an old HDD.

I will need to find a way to keep the logic rail (5v) powered while I crank up the 12v rail. An old phone charger should work

If you do it, can you take the cover off so you can see the platters spinning?

yea just have multiple sources of power

but my vote goes to a optical drive.

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Yup. I already have a prime candidate for this, the heads are missing but it spins perfectly

Not sure what happened to the quote

I would need basically 3 phase AC. Wonder if I could use a 555 and some shift registers... Probably could

i thought it was just 3 pin where it takes a voltage and is pwm controlled? is it not?

That's what you think 0.o

I vote for a CPU. Just pass as much voltage as you can through a couple of the pins.

Nope. Its basically a 3 phase AC motor.

`-` the more you know

edit:

try this maybe, though you might not be able to go full 64v since it'll exceed 10A depending on your motor `-`

and it'll probably kill it instantly lol

edit: enable subtitle `-`

Spoiler
