Ghetto Build Log - Edzel's Video Editing Rig Upgrade

LinusTech

This is a video I've been meaning to make for a long time. Mostly because I've been meaning to upgrade Edzel's video editing station for a long time. The problem for him was a couple of things.

I'm going to list out the components as well as suggested replacements if you were to want to try to build something similar to this and pick things that aren't ridiculous. I'll also provide a source or two for where you can get them  :)

I

CORE COMPONENTS

CPU: Intel 3960X "Sandy Bridge E" Unlocked Processor - Suggested replacement: 4930K
NCIX: http://bit.ly/1aMmxVR
Amazon: http://geni.us/rFsovM

SSD: Crucial M4 128GB - Suggested replacement: Samsung 840 Evo 250GB
NCIX: http://bit.ly/1a5Dd9P
Amazon: http://geni.us/a3Kd

Motherboard: ASUS Rampage IV Gene
NCIX: http://bit.ly/18An6ns
Amazon: http://geni.us/kGL76qP

Case: Silverstone Sugo SG01 - Note that the links below are a newer SIMILAR model, not exactly the same case
NCIX: http://bit.ly/17KQuV2
Amazon: http://geni.us/DS0ip

Video Card #1: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 780 - We're using it for its CUDA capabilities and of course Kepler has that awesome onboard H.264 encoder
NCIX: http://bit.ly/1eqNMcD
Amazon: http://geni.us/DG5wcXC

Video Card #2: NVIDIA Quadro 4000 - Suggested replacement: K4000. Get that instead. It's better in every way.
NCIX: N/A
Amazon: http://geni.us/dtEy

Network Card: Emulex OCE11101-NX - For most people this... really won't be relevant. It's a 10Gbit network card, so unless you have the infrastructure for it...
NCIX: http://bit.ly/1a6a4eE
Amazon: N/A

Storage Drive: WD Velociraptor 1TB - Suggested replacement: Honestly unless you're working over the network like we do, get something with more capacity like a Black

NCIX: http://bit.ly/1dqSa8s
Amazon: http://geni.us/TkNITY

RAM: Kingston Value RAM 8GB Sticks - Suggested replacement: I can't find the exact SKU anymore so here's some other similar one.
NCIX: http://bit.ly/1a5EPR1
Amazon: http://geni.us/xBRA0ws

Power Supply: be quiet! Dark Power Pro 550W - This was a borderline choice, and the 850W would be required if you're going to overclock.
NCIX:http://bit.ly/16aKLL4
Amazon:-http://geni.us/J9OTBj

Cooling Components

I used generic fans for the exhaust, and a stock heatsink for the CPU (need to replace that) so I'll go with my de-facto fan recommendations here:

CPU Heatsink
NCIX: http://bit.ly/1drqqAu
Amazon: http://geni.us/tOfmJW

80mm Fans
NCIX: http://bit.ly/16b8r1O

"Ghetto Build Log", still has more power than Linus's personal rig, which hasn't been updated in 6 months.  :P

Also, don't you mean H.265?

The SG01! I love that case! My only problem with this case is there is no 120mm fan mount, that i can't mount a 120mm radiator on it.

btw, do u guys think i could achieve optimum temperature in this case with 4770k and Thermaltake Bigwater 760 Pro? thx~~

liking the build

but I wouldve went with a coolermaster elite 361 for a portable workstation rig.

It fits full atx boards(8 rams slot ftw), has 1 5.25 drive bay, fits about 5in of cpu cooler.

and is 26 liters big. (while the sg01 is 22.3 liters.)

and it s really inexpensive. (it s ugly but who cares, it s a workstation...)

idk if the fact it s more of a tower instead of a cube could be a problem for plane travel...

Anything I write is just a comment, take is as such, there is no guarantees associated with anything I say.

This right would be a nice opportunity to test out some low profile coolers. How much height do you have in between there?

Oh, That should be enough to run a Noctua NH-L12, but only in single fan-mode, and I fear that might not be good enough.

What's the card reader used? I rarely see any 5.25" ones. They're all 3.5" and my case only has 5.25" drive bays. Thanks

Did the motherboard happen to have 2 USB 3.0 19 pin header for both the card reader and case USB 3.0 ports? Or are the ports that are "dead" the case USB 3.0?

I have an idea on how to water cool that pc, mount the card reader in the bottom slot, cut a hole in the lid of the case above the 5.25 drive bays and mount a h80i with one fan there.
