i7 6950X (10 core) officially leaked on Intel's website

But can it run Crysis?

Yes, even in a software renderer. That's how powerful this chip is.

10 cores * 3.3*10^9 Hz(all cores active boost is lower than the rated)

* 2 ops per clock (fma) * 256 bits per vector / 32 bits per datem = 528GFlops. That's also ignoring that you could use the dedicated FPU as well in each (just change 256 to 288 which brings us to 594GFlops).

$1,000 dollar cpu started with the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition, and it's been like this for all of the other extreme editions that comes after. Now Intel has broken their tick tock cycle as well as their $1k price tag tradition for their ee cpus. What's next? 4 cpu optimizations and a $2k ee cpu? Screw this crap.

lol

Intel has done $1500 extreme edition before: Core 2 Quad QX9775, http://ark.intel.com/products/34692

Why did you put an Intel stock cooler on the FX 9590? It was never going to survive like that :(

Lol, I know, I was just being sarcastic. However I am curious to see how a pair of 2670's stack up against this beast in multi threaded work loads, as the current best i7 gets its butt handed to it.

16 cores vs. 8 and you expected the 8 to fare well? And you will not be able to pick up 2 of them for $140.

That's a xeon rebadged to Core i7 for their dual cpu gaming platform, SkullTrail. Single socket EE has always been $1,000 dollars.

That wasn't my point. My point was if someone is buying this new CPU and has a smaller budget (well enough to purchase this but it isn't unlimited) and his sole purpose was for multi threaded tasks... Which would be better for the money?

Also yeah I kinda did considering the CPU is $1,000, and the other two are $140 combined...

Certainly will!

I am currently on X99 but might switch to AMD in the coming years if the CPUs and motherboards are up to snuff

It's more likely AMD's AM4 and beyond will be more bleeding edge than current Intel platforms. Intel will be attempting to catch up in that regard while AMD is surely going to plan on using everything they can to sell the new architecture to everyone.

For example, I believe AM4 will have the most recent Thunderbolt, USB 3.1+, etc.

I doubt AMD will have direct TB3 support. Probably via 3rd party add-in chips. That said, huh?! The enthusiast socket for Skylake-E is the same they'll use for the new Purley platform that will have pin capabilities to have iGPU, FPGA, DSP, and other embedded accelerators on the package. There will also be capabilities for HMC and HBM caches. How do you expect AM4 to be more advanced than that. No one comes from this far behind and leapfrogs the frontrunner in one go.

Do you think Skylake-E is still due in Q1/Q2(early)?

$150.

I'm saying nothing about the CPU, just saying that this CPU with this vendor have been floating around here the last couple weeks.

They are all over eBay for $69 each. http://www.ebay.com/itm/SR0KX-INTEL-XEON-E5-2670-8-CORE-2-60GHz-20M-8GT-s-115W-PROCESSOR-CPU-/281889330127?hash=item41a1e9d3cf:g:IckAAOSwzhVWrZBO

However, if i wanted to beat the 6950x in multi threaded workloads, I would go all out and do it in style.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-E5-2695-v4-ES-2-0-2-5GHz-18C-LGA2011-3-Broadwell-CPU-/281988420256?hash=item41a7d1d2a0:g:YW8AAOSwLpdW-ysx

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-E5-2686-v3-ES-CPU-2-0GHz-18-Core-Max-3-5GHz-Close-to-E5-2699-v3-SR1XD-/272198983382?hash=item3f6052ded6:g:3G0AAOSwr7ZW70uo

Some of the ES Xeons can be overclocked depending on the board (EVGA X99 classy can overclock them, for example) so assuming you had a cooler capable of taking these to 4ghz without smokey the bear getting up in your face about it, it would be funny to bench. Besides. Who would buy the 6950x if lifting was their main goal? If you want lifters, get a Xeon, plain and simple.

Huh... Neat! Well, I always do custom water cooling (school desktop being an exception since it moves into a storage locker and out every 5 months), so that's really not an issue.

Is there a list of the ones that will overclock?

Mostly only higher end really expensive xeons are overclockable.

Actually it's usually the 1600 series, or the 1-socket ones, which is a bummer.

No it's not. For computing tasks it's really not. I ran the sisoftware sandra suite of benchmarks and my 5820K was scoring multiple times that of the 9590 in financial calculations, encryption, scientific calculations, etc. It's not as simple as 2 AMD cores = 1 intel core like I used to believe. Their architecture is lacking in a lot of key areas. Understandably since it's ancient

Because using ddr4 has nothing to do with those...

would you argue the 5820k is twice as powerful as the 4960x based on the hashing bandwidth?

sandra-cryptography.png

No? Then please don't apply that comparison to the FX 9590 or any other platform running ddr3.

Zen had certainly better be up to date and significantly superior to the 9590, but in terms of raw horsepower the difference is not as drastic as you picture it (although it is obviosuly large).

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨
