2.6 TB of documents showing "how the rich and powerful use tax havens to hide their wealth" leaked

Mossack Fonseca, a law firm which offers to administer your offshore company for a fee and has over 200,000 clients, had their servers breached and 2.6TB of documents stolen which show

how a global industry led by major banks, legal firms, and asset management companies secretly manages the estates of the world’s rich and famous: from politicians, Fifa officials, fraudsters and drug smugglers, to celebrities and professional athletes.

They show how Mossack Fonseca has helped clients launder money, dodge sanctions and evade tax.

The company says it has operated beyond reproach for 40 years and has never been charged with criminal wrong-doing.

The documents show links to 72 current or former heads of state in the data, including dictators accused of looting their own countries.

Gerard Ryle, director of the ICIJ, said the documents covered the day-to-day business at Mossack Fonseca over the past 40 years.

"I think the leak will prove to be probably the biggest blow the offshore world has ever taken because of the extent of the documents," he said.

This seems to be the largest data breach in history and it seems to be some pretty scary stuff. A lot of the data in the breech involved many high level government officials including:

  • Egypt's former president Hosni Mubarak
  • Libya's former leader Muammar Gaddafi
  • Syria's president Bashar al-Assad.
  • Russian banks and close associates of President Putin
  • Icelandic Prime Minister Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson

Why should you care?

Good question. Personally, I think it just demonstrates the level of corruption that exists around the world. Potentially one of your government officials or their close family members will be on this list, potentially not. 

This also demonstrates yet again how important good security practices are, 2.6TB is an ENORMOUS amount of data and it is beyond me how they could steal that much data before anyone found out. I hope more information on how this was done is released in the future. 

 

I guarantee someone, if not, a lot of people, are getting fired over this.

This is insanity, I cannot wait till this all unravels and we get some more hard numbers on for instance the amounts of money involved. I never believed in the "shadow business men" but damn this is making it very hard to become very paranoid

I think the official site for the analysis of data is http://panamapapers.sueddeutsche.de/en/ but I'm a little doubtful that you'll ever be able to wget the data.

If I recall correctly, no American politicians have been named. On reddit people were crying foul and bullshit, but lets get something straight.

 

The IRS doesn't care if you lost a child recently.

The IRS doesn't care if you're rich.

The IRS doesn't care if you're a politician.

The IRS doesn't care if you put your money off shore.

If the IRS cared about your bullshit, it would try to collect tax on it.

 

It's harder for Americans than, most nationalities to get away with stuff for any length of time. Not to mention tax evasion has extremely hefty penalties and the public will string you up from a pole if you get caught. Historically Americans absolutely hate tax evasion and have used it *many* times to take down crime bosses, corrupt people, etc.. It's just not worth risking for most business people in the U.S. when there are tricks and tax breaks you can leverage.

Cooperation are a different thing on the other hand.

It would not surprise me that no Americans are caught up in this thing. We got our own stuff going on. We shall see however...

Quick thoughts on system: I7 is extremely quick and I'm glad I spent the extra for hyper-threading. I regret my decision to get the GTX 970, it has horrible coil whine. There isn't any excuse for this terrible whine I and others are having. I HIGHLY recommend a 144hz monitor. Future Improvements/upgrades: Rubber fan mounts, basic speakers, more ram (for a total of 16gb), replace GPU.

144hz is love. 144hz is life. I like to submit unfinished posts then do about 20 edits. I like the Night Theme too.

I would be quite interested to know more about how they actually processed all of this data. According to Wikipedia they OCR'd quite a bit of it and used some other fancy stuff to work through it.

 

In any case, if this has kept 376 journalists busy for about a year there should be some juicy info in there I hope. I must say I find it pretty impressive that so many people have been working on this for so long and until now there was nothing about it on the wires. That's some special-ops military-grade discipline.

I doubt it will fundamentally change how the world works. BUT: I would bet that heads will roll. Not all of them, but some.

 

If we think long-term, things like this might actually cause a slow shift. If people can't rely on their secret machinations being kept secret anymore, it might affect their behavior for the better eventually. Not all of them, and not from "totally corrupt" to "holy savior", but if it has the effect of some people not going quite as far as they would have otherwise, that's change for the positive.

 

It won't save the world, but it might improve it slightly. And in the end, through the millennia of history, improvements usually only happen in small increments over long periods of time. But still, the long-term trend is upwards. If you compare the life of an average human today with that of an average human 3000 years ago, we're probably better off today, all things considered. It was from an anonymous source who handed it to the Sueddeutsche Zeitung. How admissible it is in court might depend on court, country, document... probably not going to be decided for everything at once.

 

But even if it's not, it could still end more than one career, or at least severely damage it.

 

 

In any case, I think this should make for an interesting combination of disillusion and schadenfreude in the coming weeks.
