Tracer victory pose to be removed from Overwatch

Blizzard has announced that the Overwatch character Tracer will have her victory pose changed after complaints of the pose "turning the character into another female sex symbol."

While I don't necessarily think that changing the character's design is a negative thing in this situation, I do take issue with the reasons that were given for why it should be changed. As the original person who made the complaint stated:

This pose says to the player base, oh we've got all these cool diverse characters, but at any moment we are willing to reduce them to sex symbols to help boost our investment game,”

 

“I have a young daughter that everyday when I wake up wants to watch the Recall trailer again. She knows who Tracer is, and as she grows up, she can grow up alongside these characters. What I'm asking is that as you continue to add to the Overwatch cast and investment elements, you double down on your commitment to create strong female characters. You've been doing a good job so far, but shipping with a tracer pose like this undermines so much of the good you've already done.”

So you say that it doesn't fit her personality, that I can understand and get behind (bad pun, sorry). But then you go on to say that you don't want your daughter to "grow up along side these characters." This is where I start to have issues, how can you have an issue with the sexuality of one character but not another and in a game that is about killing people of all things. Saying that you don't want your daughter to pick up negative influences from these characters is a pretty generic and weak argument in my opinion. If you don't want your daughter to be influenced by the games characters then she shouldn't be playing, it's that simple.

 

Saying that the company is responsible for degrading the character to a sex symbol is not true because you are the one that has chosen to view her as a sex symbol. When I look at it, I see a character that in a victory pose with a certain level of sass involved, it is all in the eye of the interpreter.

While I can't necessarily agree or disagree with the fact that it doesn't fit her personality, having never played the game, blaming it on over sexualizing one character and not another is an outstanding double standard.

 

What I see here is a guy who takes personal issue with the character's supposed sexually explicit pose but not another. The only reason that I can think of for this is that he associates this character with someone he personally knows and doesn't want them to be portrayed in such a way. I'm not necessarily downing the decision, but I don't agree with the reasons given at all. I think they are too weak and too personally driven.

I'd question even that: they know enough about their audience to know it's a vocal and loud minority but still a minority. 

 

Their pandering is much more ingrained they likely have several SJWs in key positions of the company making them far more politically motivated that you'd guess.

Disappointed in Blizzard with such trivial things. The person who made the post... those kind of people get alpha access /facepalm and also, saying such nonsense and using the daughter card. Bad parenting indeed. There are way more sexualized things around and way more violent yet that's ok and all. Truly sad world we live in.

 

Blizzard appealing to these kind of people instantly while they actually do ignore some things that require way more attention and can be given solution, yet don't act. 

Makes me sad. I'm also long term Blizzard fan, mainly their main series games, sad to see posts like this and dumbing down games etc.
