Is the ECR501 Card Reader compatible with the Mastercase Pro 5?

this is the manual for that motherboard

unless your buying an el cheapo psu there should be more than enough molex connections, , this is a pic of a standard psu

standard-psu-100021930-gallery.jpg.b5b90

also that motherboard has 6 places you can plug the sata cable into, it really doesnt matter which one you plug it into, page 1-32 will show you where.

edit: sata 1 & 2 ports are better for your ssd/hdd , use 3-6 for extra stuff

I am planning to get a new PC, and I though I have actually finished planning... Then, I realized there is no SD card reader in my case (Cooler Master Mastercase Pro 5), so I did some researching and found the ENERMAX ECR501 Card Reader, which looks great. But I couldn't find any way to know if it's compatible with the case... The case has 2 slots for optical drives, so I was planning to put it on top of my optical drive, but then I realized that it's only for optical drives... Though I am still not sure if you can put a card reader there, and more specifically, the ECR501. To know if all of the parts are compatible, I've used the website "PCPartPicker", but for some reason I couldn't find any place where I can choose a card reader... :/

the slots for optical drives are generically called 5.25 inch bays (sometimes simply called 5 inch bays), and they'll take anything made for a 5 inch bay including the card reader listed. Odd it doesn't list it, it usually says it.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

you would be able to put one in , i have something similar in my old case though mine was for a 3.5(got a 5" adapter), but what u need to be concerned with is if your case has usb 3.0 and if your motherboard has more than one usb 3.0 header because the card reader will use it, unless you decide that you prefer the case ones

http://www.enermax.com/home.php?fn=eng/product_a1_1_4&p=2&lv0=3&lv1=82&no=284#anchor check page two of the photos for all the connections

here is how mine is setup

@Syntaxvgm I ccouldn't find on the specs of ECR501 if it's made for 5 Inch Bay. I guess I can know by looking at the dimensions, but what axis should this be 5 inches on?

@papapoi So are you saying it is compatible with the case, but I need to make sure it's compatible with the motherboard?

it will fit in the case its 5.25 in, what you need to find out is if you have an open usb 3.0 connection on your motherboard most have only 1, but have multiple usb 2.0 altogether you will need a open usb 3.0 header, usb 2.0, sata express and a molex connector for power. if you still need help let me know what motherboard you have and i can check.

...the long one....

5.25 inches has to do with the front area. The actual length of it varies, nothing is longer than a dvd drive typically.

You can put tons of things in these bays- hot swap hard drive adapters, fan controllers....drawers lol

@papapoi So I need 1 USB 2.0 port (for those 5 USB 2.0 ports on the card reader), and 2 USB 3.0 ports (1 for the case and one for the card reader), right? I also see there are two white cables on the card reader, which I am not sure what they are for and where I am suppose to connect them to. Also the motherboard? And there is a small black one which is a SATA cable, should I also connect that one to the motherboard as well, or somewhere else? My motherboard (Asus Z170 Pro Gaming) only has one USB 3.0 port, so I searched for another one, and I found this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-MAXIMUS-VIII-HERO-Motherboards/dp/B0126R4F8W It has everything I know I need, I am just not sure how that SATA thingy works...

@Syntaxvgm Oh, I didn't notice... It says at the name it's 5.25 inch. :P But I am still wondering 5.25 inch on which axis... Is it from bottom to top or right to left?

yes that motherboard will work since it has 2 x 20pin usb 3.0 connections, mine has only 1 so i lose functionality on my case ports, the white one you probably are referring to are the power connector(molex) which connects to your power supply to power the quick charging port, the sata cable connect to your mb also for the card reader functionality since they are considered storage device. that mb is out of my price range but if you can afford it, that's a great choice for your needs

@papapoi And how can I know if I have enough SATA cables on the motherboard? And how can I know I have the right power ports on the power supply?

@papapoi Ok then, I am not planning to have so many hard drives/SSDs, and my PSU is a pretty great one, so I think it should work. :)
