Google silently admits defeat with new Android app guidelines. Makes android apps look like IOS apps.

Google has decided that All apps on their platform should look like IOS apps with their new "design guideline". It states that apps should have a navigation bar which consists of 1 colour and is at the bottom of the app. This is exactly how the majority of IOS apps work.

Android apps are going to start looking a bit more like iOS apps in the near future. Google 

updated its Android design guidelines

yesterday telling developers that, in some cases, they should place a bar across the bottom of their app that can be used to navigate between different sections. If that sounds familiar, it's because that's exactly how most iOS apps handle navigation.

 

Google is putting its own spin on what it calls the "bottom navigation bar." Unlike on iOS, Google wants the bar to disappear when a person is scrolling, freeing up more of the screen. Buttons will also enlarge ever so slightly to indicate that they've been selected; in a case where there are several buttons on the bar, the highlighted button might also push other icons slightly out of the way to better indicate its state.

 

BUT It's important to note!

This isn't the end of the hamburger menu, however. Google says the bottom navigation bar should only be used when an app offers three to five core areas. If there are two areas, developers should use tabs; if there are six or more areas, developers should stick with the hamburger menu. Three to five sections is still a sweet spot that many apps will fit into. But even in that case, Google says the hamburger menu can be used as an alternative to the bottom bar.

 

Whatever. I like navigation on the top thank you very much or using hamburger menus or "the Microsoft" menus xD (insert image showing what is meant) Ignore the numbers they have no meaning.

OMG! Choose a menu lay out and keep it consistent! Ahhhhh! This is driving me crazy. Keep it to one and don't change it.

Seems like everything on the mobile market comes a bit closer together. Haven´t had an android in years though TBH.

eeeee i prefer having a capacitive button that summons the hamburger menu, it's cleaner and  removes clutter from the screen

Well, the Material design generally involves a hamburger menu (most ridiculous name ever) that can slide in from the left. So no one actually needs to press the button - gestures can do it.

 

This new guideline is evident in the latest Photos update where some of the menu items have been copied and added as a bottom navigation option as well. As the guideline says: not every app needs this feature. Preferably only frequently accessed items in some apps where it makes sense.

People like IOS and Iphones because they work when they want and how they want. People don't really care what IOS looks like as they don't really have a choice. I feel Apple is also becoming more open as they have unlocked the keyboard and content blocking in safari. IOS still suck though and IOS7 was way better in terms of speed and bugs

FFS Google, I've liked you and your OS (since Android 4.1) and I loved Lollipop and am intrigued by Marshmallow but if you make this a thing in Android N... I don't know what I'll do probably not upgrade if Samsung decides to have another update or two for the Galaxy S6, which I don't know why Samsung wouldn't.

Really depends how it's implemented in end across apps specially with different functions and options.

 

Though I would like that they change Material Design and that "cards" crap. There can be so less needed tapping.

Tbh, Google can't even get a coherent system together for their own apps.

 

Most of their apps still use slide in from the left. Chrome and YouTube use just the " hamburger menus".

 

Personally, as long as an app has at least of these methods I'm cool, unless they change from one to the other. The amount of times I've tried to slide in from the left on the YouTube app, is just annoying.

 

 

If there's gonna be three methods, bottom menu, hamburger, slide in from the left. All different between apps, I think it's gonna be a bit of a mess.

Hamburger menu/drag from left is better IMO. Takes up screen real estate only when you want it to. 

Important for me since I only buy phones under 5"
