I think older Minecraft versions or mods still require Java, but I only play the later ones so no Java needed for me.

It's really worrisome that these things happen and it seems no one wants to put a permanent stop to them. Always just workarounds.

Minecraft doesn't use Java anymore? Huh, what's it using now? Is it DirectX now that Microsoft bought them? ;)

I just found a bunch of .js files that were never there before in my download folder 0_o

Laptop:

-Overkill Dell XPS

Fully maxed out early 2017 Dell XPS 15, GTX 1050 4GB, 7700HQ, 1TB nvme SSD, 32GB RAM, 4k display. 97Whr battery :x
Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

-Crapbook

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

I'll turn off adblock when these websites become legally responsible for the advertising that appears on their website. Meaning that if I get a virus from it, they are financially responsible for not securing their own shit.

Just use Windows File History (So you can go back in time on files that just got encrypted), and backup your stuff. I really don't get why people don't use File History feature.

Sorry I was a bit mistaken, it doesn't require Java to be installed on the system, but the Minecraft Launcher downloads the most up-to-date Java version and runs it inside its own ecosystem, so the PC doesn't have access to Java at all only Minecraft does.

More info here: http://www.howtogeek.com/210907/minecraft-doesnt-need-java-installed-anymore-its-time-to-remove-it/

So technically it does use Java, but you never have to download or touch Java ever again in regards to Minecraft. Which is a huge plus for me, I love Minecraft just to kill a few hours or mod the crap out of it and needing Java really put a hamper to that with all these security concerns coming up constantly.

Good, another reason to never disable ABP and NoScript. Ads are the electric aids, cancer and ebola all at once.

The greed has taken over the brainwashed idiots devs developing ads. Hopefully one day those complete morons will be legitally responsible and the website owners too since they also add a shit ton of ads on their shitty websites.

Sadly that's what happened to my dad. He got a metric butt ton of viruses all because he never ran the Anti-virus and anti-malware. I told him that his methods were not effective but he was all like "it's fine. I know what I'm doing". That is why when I get a new pc at his place I will keep him from downloading anything without me checking it over.

You missed a word in your quote there buddy. You completely changed the entire meaning of what I said. Shouldn't someone who frequently posts in the news section have a little more concern for that kind of thing?

Yeah I know they are pretty similar, but having Java installed allows unwanted code to have a much easier time running on my system than if I didn't have it installed. I'd still need to allow it to run and all but with Java installed it can run where as not having it installed would make it pretty much impossible for Java programs to run. So I actually have to be careful now :( also Java's update prompt is about as annoying as they get...

Before installing java:

Executables originally written in C++ run on your system.

Java does not.

After installing java:

Executables originally written in C++ still run on your system.

Java programs can run.

Somehow this makes you think java is insecure?

Java isn't supposed to be your main coding language, you learn Java to make it easier for you to learn any other language. Once you understand how one language works, going through the syntax of other languages becomes a breeze.

And not all Java programs are web plugin apps ;).

I can't yet say if this is valid c++ yet but I'm sure that it's valid Java.

Java was not built as a starter language. It just so happens to be fairly straightforward to learn. Java is one of the most in demand languages in the world for career software developers.

Once you learn to program, you write in whatever language suites the specific problem you are trying to solve, if most of the problems you solve are suited to java, then java will be your "main coding language"

Meant by Java being a main language as in its the first language many people start their programming and build their   understanding of its basis on it.

the only way to get ransom32 on a Linux system is to manually download it yourself, and i would never download a 30MB file got through a banner ad. Also you have to run it yourself, and give it root permission to run. So yeah i'm pretty safe, social engineering won't work on me.

I have adblock, noscript and ghostery on firefox and some tracker still somehow managed to bypass all that. Now all the ads i get in my phone (!) are from some hardware store that operates in my city. GG.

What phone? That could be the phone itself. I know the iPhone has its own ad API that by default does allow personalized advertising.

News from the underground: Ransom32 2.0 is just 4MB (but yeah, you still have to run it yourself. If you aren't already infected with a trojan). Still, I'm sure that someone who cares for his own safety knows what to do, so take this just as an FYI

I haven't played myself in a long time but since you said so I had to go download it again just to try it out. I don't have Java installed but it worked anyway. It did crash for some reason and I got some java error so what you're saying seems correct that you do not need java installed but it uses certain java files with the minecraft exe itself.

Although, do I have something to worry about regarding Java sort of being installed along with Minecraft? I don't really play it anymore so if there is a potential security risk having "java" (minecraft) installed I'd like to avoid having it installed. I cannot find it in the control panels list of installed programs so is there anything to worry about? Or is it really only Minecraft that can use certain java files it depends on but that's it?
