ok with mkv u can add sooo many audio and subtitles ( various types)

with other formats u cant put as many

mkv is not limited to any codec or system, as it can hold virtually anything. It is an open standard and open source container format

ok so format and codec mean the same thing as container? @qwertywarrior

codec vs container format

a codec is a software or hardware tool that encodes or decodes audio or video into or from some audio or video format. Audio and video encoded with many codecs might be put into a MKV  container

rephrase im confused sorry @qwertywarrior

you should stop thinking of codecs its pointless

basically anything that can convert or play video/audio is basically a codec

container format is liek what i said above like AVI mkv  m2ts etc

thank you :) @qwertywarrior

in ur first post u said lossless

thats specifically talking about audio

Lossless data compression allows the original data to be perfectly reconstructed from the compressed data.

its normally found in blurays as "DTS MA or TrueHD or PCM "

i cant tell the difference between them

and again please wright down ALL your questions and post them in one thread not like what u did today  and yesterday

ok so the video quality in bluray isnt compressed? only the audio? @qwertywarrior

video in blurays are compressed but its a very good compression that doesn't remove quality by a lot

the type of compression normally  used  is H264

there are two types of audio quality: lossless and lossy. Lossless music keeps all the audio quality of the original source—in most cases, CD—intact, while lossy music compresses the files for space savings (though at slightly diminished quality).

bluray has lossless audio

bluray has compressed video but its a very good compression that doesnt look that bad vs uncompressed video

@qwertywarrior ok are we talking pure bluray discs or rips on the net or both?

i guess we have to talk about bitrate :)

now put this in ur head

the higher the bitrate the better it looks

a bluray disc rip is about 25GB - 45GB

most of that is audio in different languages

i cant talk about the rips on the net  here on the forums but ill tell you what they do and what i do to make file sizes smaller

------------------------------------------------------------------

lets say i have a 45GB rip from a bluray disc

i take out all the audio except the one i want like english

and that saves a lot of space

next

i compress the video

the way to do that is decrease the bitrate

next its the audio

most audio is for surround systems  like 7.1 and 5.1 systems

im sure u only have two speakers

so what u do is convert it to just use two speakers (2.0 or 2.1)  which saves a lot of space and then next change its bit rate to something like 250 - 300 kbps

@qwertywarrior also are you sure that if I touch the screen with one finger, not very hard but touch it to either squish a tiny one quarter of a fly size bug or accidentally touch it if im showing something to someone pointing to it, would this damage it / do anything?
