Home/Personal Nas/server, build and os

Hi guys,

I bought a new gaming computer a few months ago and, since then, my old rig has been sitting alone in its box in a closet.

I've been thinking, for a while now, to recycle it as a nas/home server but I don't know if its hardware would be adequate for now. (Here's the build list)

For the storage, I don't plan to use more than the 256Go of the ssd right now, I'll mostly just store the os and my music library.

My main concerns are for the cpu/cpu cooler (amd stock one :/) and the gpu.

Is the A10 7700k ok for a nas? And for a remote compiler (I'd connect on it through ssh)

Would I need to change the cpu cooler as I'd let the pc run 24/7?

Will the r9 270x be of any use, as the a10 has a decent iGPU?

Thanks for your help :)

Also, how could I make it accessible from another network than my home?

a10 is fine for the nas, the r9 is useless since the nas won't be used for graphics. as for compiling, it won't compile a game or anything massive in a decent time but yeah it should be fine. The cooler should be okay, just check it under load the first few times. you culd sell the r9 and add some hdd reds to the nas. Use port forwarding or a vpn to link networks.

I would only compile some school project, nothing heavy, but I don't know if it would be practical with my up speed of 500-1000ko/s

And do you know what os I could use for it? Linus praised freenas a lot, but i don't know if it would allow me something like compiling small projects or running programs like a vm

running a vm on a remote a10 at kb/s is probably not going to happen. But if you can compile in ubuntu then use ubuntu server(same support just no gui) and read this

btw how are you only at kb/s? your internet connection doesn't effect speeds within you network(home, a vpn still depends on the internet), most switches and routers run at least 10/100mb/s

Its my internet connection that's at kb/s. I have a gigabit network in local.

My isp connection is 180Mb/s down and between 5 and 10Mb/s up

ah, so you were wanting to compile from your class to your nas? I mean 5mbps might work with that but good luck getting access to it from your schools network (firewalls, admin rights, configuration probs, etc)

Yes, at home, I'd directly use my gaming rig^^

And for accessing it from class, I'd mostly use my 4g hotspot or a custom vpn (I don't know if that's even possible) as we only have wifi on "rest area"

well some routers will actually give you an url to access your network from or if you can do some port forwarding then you won't need the vpn. But you might look into things like this http://www.howtogeek.com/135036/how-to-connect-to-a-vpn-on-android/
