i don't think so, not in modern games...games use more GPU these days and they are pretty much all multi-threaded...only some old ass MMORPG and RTS games would hammer the CPU too hard to the point where it would be your limiting factor in games...it's a great match for high/ultra 1080p gaming.

 

edit: i saw you put an ''S'' after 980...if you plan to run them in SLI then yeah at 1080p it's stupidly GPU overkill so the CPU will hold you back.

GTX 980 is a 1440p capable card...and very very strong for 1080p gaming on it's own...you don't need 2 of them unless you try to do 4K (in which case they will fall short...way short)

No my fault there. If I can i will avoid sli in my build. I think a single 980 is ok for the next 2 years..hope so...

Depends. It may or may not be. Games using A-sync shaders will hammer a 980 to the death

yes it is.

and if it's not, you always have the option to sell it for 250$ or something and order a next gen 400$ GPU for an upgrade or something...that's the great thing with PC you can upgrade when you need...and for now and the foreseeable future a GTX 980 will run 1080p gaming perfectly fine.

i5-6500 and xeon E3-1231V3 have similar performance in games...for the most part...the xeon is better...but not 60$ better.

It is actually - HT is VERY neat for modern AAA games that use 8 threads

yes but looking forward...with DX12 in the pipe and stuff...game optimization will get better and better i feel and a strong quad-core like the i5-6500 will remain viable for years IMHO. Games are getting more and more GPU dependent and less CPU intensive as we move forward.

Anyways, i have to leave but i'll say this: i'd rather have a single GTX 980 vs. GTX 970 in SLI...and i'd rather have the xeon E3 vs the 6500 but i don't think it's worth an extra 60$...maybe it is...looks like it's 50$ now with the motherboard factored in...but i would rather have a DDR4 platform for future upgrades (H170 offer a better upgrade path and you get to be on latest tech and might be able to re-use DDR4 memory on a next platform)

Asus and MSI, avoid gigabyte if possible. Asrock is alright.

Yes. Single 980 + Xeon will use around 300W
Single Fury + Xeon - 350W
