Is the server of your (former) school protected as badly as in mine? :D

The server of my former school was AWFUL. Really. We ran, like 100 PCs off a server that had an original Pentium with 60 MHz inside... But that's not all. You could easily run something as administrator, install all kind of weird and wonderful things on it, get into command prompt, traffic was not filtered at all, you could even print anything you wanted on ANY printer within this network... It was truly abominable. But I had so much fun screwing it up that I think it was kinda worth it :D How about you? :D

my high schools servers host a GIGABYTE internet connection. 

 

however, the server is really tight, the other computers that are on the network re not.

 

lets just say, getting someone expelled wouldn't be to hard ;)

I am amazed we got anything done at all.

I discovered an exploit on my previous school's network which allowed you to see the username of everyone on the network, including hidden accounts and admin accounts

 

Couple this with the fact that EVERY account's password is reset to "password" at the beginning of the year means that you can have SHITLOADS of fun.

 

Also, I discovered that you can change the permissions on the school NAS without admin rights for some reason. Had the entire student datashare down for a week.

Back then those of us who had laptops, would all do our work on those, sigh... I bet I still have my ZIP Drive somewhere....

Our print servers give our account £2.5 credit so we can't print too much, but we can go into debt and our balance doesn't change. Teacher accounts can change anyone's password so if one teacher has their account compromised, the entire network is compromised. This might have been pathed but our server that stores student work isnt visible but has no protection once you know the IP. The shared documents locks up if more than 10 people try and open a file at once. The servers are 4 tower servers and a rackmount backup server laid across the top of them but there is loads of rackspace left, we have 3 20U racks with 2/3 2U switches in and they're all in a single room with a basic lock. The servers store all our personal information(Name, address, home phone, and even our fingerprints)

I have an idea. (im at his old school btw)

If I use words like probably or most likely, it is because I dislike certainty. These words can probably be omitted and the sentence read as a certainty.

I swear my school's servers are more locked than the CIA's. Everything is stored on a NASs and there is no way to run any program whatsoever. The only time I have had access to anything was when I came across a random computer that some teacher or administrator had logged into an admin account on, so I decided to check the internet settings...

Some kid at my school printed 700 black sheets from every printer.....they never found out who it was even though on the printer it says who it is from

Too bad my school uses Office 365...so basically they have like a 30GB hard drive with the Word Docs and PPTs saved on Microsoft's OneDrive.

School has a heavily guarded server...but some of the Cisco instructors allow the kids to "have fun“ with the server on certain areas.

Another fun unprotected school computer story. My high school had the computers set up such that command prompt would force close when opened. I discovered one day that you could still pass batch commands through to the command prompt, though it would still close as soon as it was not running a command. 5 lines of batch script later I had it set up such that it would wait for user input, pass that user input through to command prompt, and then hold command prompt open waiting for more user input. Boom full access to command prompt.

Let's see.

 

We found a loophole to install TeamViewer, we found all of the account credential lists in the registry, we managed to unlock the CMD prompt and change stuff, some guy straight up brought a Windows 7 DVD and wiped the drive on one of the library PCs and installed his own OS.

Our school's got decent protection, when you're in the building, but when you use Remote Desktop, you can access important files on the Remote Desktop server. We found out it has an ancient Xeon this way.

Didn't really mess with it personnally. Found a way to acces everyones files, however , there were also ways to shut down stuff with cmd, but i personnally didnt try that.

Probably. I remember one time a virus got onto one of the Libraries Pentium 4 desktops (512MB RAM, 40GB HDD, Windows XP Pro) through a USB stick and took down the entire school network, and every single computer connected to it. Luckily for my School though, they still had the tape backups+the server for the Macs and Macbooks.
