NAS question, onboard nic vs Intel 27$ nic?

link955

I was watching tek syndicate video on NAS ,and he uses a Intel 27$ nic. Is it worth the 27$ and are the transfer speed noticeably faster then the usually onboard nic? Thanks

nope, gigabit ethernet is gigabit ethernet. Assuming the onboard ethernet is gigabit and the PCIe nic you are looking at is also gigabit, there will be no performance difference.

Non-Intel NICs can often cause problems and/or reduce transfer speeds due to poor optimization/worse drivers/etc, and/or have reduced compatiblity with certain hardware/software. There's a reason why Intel NICs are generally recommended in server-grade uses. With that said, there's no point in upgrading to an Intel NIC unless an issue has been experienced.

I know that, but assuming OP goes with an intel build, the onboard ethernet will very likely be made by intel.

The vast majority of consumer motherboards don't have Intel NICs (especially the cheaper ones), and some server boards don't have Intel NICs either (although most do).

It's only $30 so just read the reviews on the MoBo nic, if they're under 3 stars then buy the intel.

Honestly as long as the onboard NIC is gigabit it won't make much of a difference. I ran a test in OMV with the Killer NIC on my board, a Realtek one in an LGA 775 system, the Intel NIC on my OptiPlex 760, and a single (followed by dual) NIC setup on my M2N-SLI Deluxe and the ASUS board only pulled ahead when using both NICs.

Well, if you can, always look into the real enterprise grade server side: What NIC are they (enterprise) use there?

You'll never find Realtek ethernet devices on real servers. Most times they use Intel or Broadcomm NICs.

Reliability and performance sometimes differ. The stuff in servers is mainly build for reliability rather than just speed. The speed comes after the reliabilty.
