Hi oskarha,

I understand, no worries.

I played with risky thing this weekend. My X5450 is E0, to ensure absolute correctness of microcode I deleted everything except 067A_44, yes this is the only microcode in BIOS but still a NO go. I'm done now. Good luck to fellow hackers.

I had the same problem (G45M03 Slow)

ms-7594 has same problem, but it resolved

ms-7594 was solved by disabling C-STATE

vostro 220 bios 1.3.0 not has C-STATE
vostro 220 bios 1.2.0 has C-STATE

I tried mod bios based on 1.2.0.
And it was solved!

I added xeon microcode to 7C4D1P43.ROM and changed some defaults.

You fixed it!

I modded my Vostro 220 a few years ago and had the same problem: very laggy windows 10 system due to high DPC and ISR CPU usage. Flashing your modded bios based on 1.2.0 immediately solved the problem.

I didn't need to disable Speedstep or C1E support. I only disabled C-STATE.

Thank you for sharing!

Additional info:

For the last 2 years I had Apple OS X installed on my Vostro. Strangely enough, the C-STATE incompatibility didn't effect OS X. It only caused a problem for Windows 10.

I'm glad it worked for you! Interesting remark about issues only appearing in Windows 10.I wonder if Linux would be fine too, this might be a Windows only issue.

Hi guys,

Great to learn those Exxxx xeons are working in vostros.

I tried to get an L5430 (50w) xeon upgrade from q8300 (95w) using my Vostro 420 g45a01 mobo but no luck with 1.3.0 bios mod (lag issues in windows environment)

Might want to give it another try now that there is hope...

Any chance someone has the dell 1.2.0 bios rom file so I can add the necessary cpu microcodes?

Thanks in advance

Hi Ati

The BIOS of Vostro 420 and Vostro 220s seem to be the same file
See: https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=rn59m&lwp=rt

I think that you can use "7C4D1P43withXeon.rom" in this page

Thank you! Confirm your ROM (based on BIOS 1.2.0) working on Dell Vostro 220 with Xeon x5460 CPU. The modified 1.3.0 ROM didn't work with my setup, Windows stuck on loading. BTW how did you extracted 1.2.0 from exe file ?

Hi Ivan.

Thank you for your response.

The way to retrieve the ROM file is very simple.
Please run Vx20-120.EXE and see "C:/Users/xxxxx/AppData/Local/Temp/_xxx.tmp"(It is possible on any PC)

There should be 4 files there.
7C4D1P39.ROM
FoxAwdWINFLASH.sys
FoxAwdWINFLASH64.sys
WinFlash.exe

1.2.0 7C4D1P39.ROM

1.2.4 7C4D1P43.ROM

1.3.0 7C4D1P45.ROM

Oh, I gave it a wrong file name.

The file name is incorrect, but 7C4D1P43withXeon.rom is based on 1.2.0.

When looking at 7C4D1P43withXeon.rom in binary, you can check 7C4D1P39 at the file end.

Hello, so I know this post is over a year old. But I've followed the steps and in the bios it shows my Xeon but once in Windows it only shows my old cpu E7500. Now I did the patch with the Xeon installed in the Mobo already. Idk if that matters.

Edit: got it to work after some trouble shooting. Thank you for this post it was incredible help!

Can't believe you are trying anyway.

LGA 775 is such a dead socket these days. It doesn't even have vintage value yet like the Pentium 4 Socket 478 PCs. Give up, move on. LGA 1155 is the new LGA 775, if that's what you're into. Sandy bridge boards are cheap and widely available. It's time to put out LGA 775 and move to greater pastures.

Alright, so tell me where do you reliably get an LGA 1155 board, a decent Sandy Bridge CPU and DDR3 RAM for 25 USD (the price of a Xeon E5450)? Given that you can’t, I still think this mod is very applicable if you need more power and you can’t afford spending more.

Why are we comparing the price of a mobo, CPU, and RAM to the price of just a CPU? Who is to assume the buyer has an old LGA 775 rig laying around? If anything, we should be comparing CPU to CPU. You can find i5-2400 CPUs on ebay all day for $25.

This guide is for a specific machine, the Dell Vostro 220(s). So I would say its safe to assume that if someone is following this guide they probably already have a machine and want to upgrade the CPU (so what you say in case A applies here). Otherwise I agree.

More informations + Backup Upload

BIOS 1.2.0
Dont need to disable Speedstep or C1E support.
Only disable C-STATE.

Tested and Working on Dell Vostro 220 + Xeon E5450 Overclocked with SetFSB PLL

Using :

CV184-2APAG (NEC Express5800 S70 Type FL)

3.3GHz

Note if you Overclock with SetFSB you will need to change some settings in Windows using Windows administrator command prompt

bcdedit /set useplatformclock yes
bcdedit /set tscsyncpolicy Enhanced
bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes

These will set things back to default if your system doesn't like them...

bcdedit /set useplatformclock no
bcdedit /set tscsyncpolicy Default
bcdedit /set disabledynamictick no
You will need to reboot after any bcdedit.

A tiny program called WinTimerTester will show QueryPerformanceFreq 14.31818 MHz

Run it for 300 seconds you will see Ratio value QueryPerformanceFreq/GetTickCount to reach 1

This SetFSB overclock method will ensure that the PC clock remains functioning normally

Dear Oskarha

Thank you for your great guide. It has brought life to an old board/ram with a much faster Cpu with SSD that does everything but modern gaming. It can even play a LOT of modern games with a good enough GPU. I have been able to get Destiny 2 playing on this with only 4GB ram. The only issue with these old computers is RAM. We cannot upgrade to 8GB Ram which I believe is Supported by BIOS 1.3.0

But this BIOS does not have any option to disable C-State.

I hope someone can make a BIOS that can allow disable C-State for 1.3.0 and allow for more than 4GB Ram. With 8GB RAM this system would be perfect.
