Yeah, @nicklmg @LinusTech can we please stop with the clickbait titles?

As much as I love LMG, this is getting bad. Like teksyndicate levels of clickbait.

@LinusTechIt also bothers me how out of context these videos are taken; I spend a lot of time on the forums trying to help people and it is kind of disheartening constantly having to tell people "no, this is not a practical solution for you. You will see no benefit to this since you do not transfer files directly between two computers." or "this will not decrease your ping/increase the speed of your internet"

Well that's not really LMG's fault... That's a lack of common sense thing.

Really all they had to do to make it non-clickbait was add the word "internal" before network.

Ah well.

@JoeyDM they could do a better job of explaining it in the videos though :/ or through a disclaimer at the beginning of the video. I kind of imagine people get halfway through the video and have already purchased used NICs from the internet awaiting their shiny new internet speeds without realizing what they're doing. It seems the number of people asking for this type of solution are equal parts "I want to try this" as "I bought the parts...why don't more cables give me bigger speed???"

I'm wondering, I have a TL-SG3210 switch with 2 SFP slots, however, my NAS is a 1513+ with no SFP slot... if I do a direct connection to my pc with a NIC card with SFP slot... will my network transfer speed in the NAS increase too....?

PS: Ultra Noob here... so apologies if I made any weird opinions for my setup

SFP is only 1Gbit

woah slow down there tiger..... SFP/SFP+ is a type of connector/plug

the individual protocols/transceivers/cable inside of that SFP/SFP+ connector determine the speed of the link.

for example, Fibre Channel can have a speed of 4.25 Gbit/s depending on the wavelength of the light the transceiver uses while built in a SFP connector.

The SFP transceiver is not capable of 10Gbit, SFP+ is however.

How is this not a "disclaimer at the beginning of the video?"

At least watch the video closely before you come in and complain about what we are or are not doing...

While what Linus said seems obvious enough it clearly isn't considering the number of people who have asked about this video and the SMB link aggregation video.

Basically what needs to be said is this:

"DISCLAIMER: THIS WILL NOT IMPROVE YOUR DOWNLOAD/UPLOAD SPEEDS NOR WILL IT AFFECT YOUR OUTGOING/INCOMING CONNECTION IF YOUR ISP IS ALREADY THE LIMITING FACTOR (WHICH IT MORE THAN LIKELY IS).

I did watch the video long before commenting. It still needed to be clearer. And the word "internal" probably should have been in the title. We've had people come on the forums thinking they can 10x their internet connection.

Ordinarily, I'd have no problem whatsoever with the video description/title as is, however, from the perspective of the average user, network speed could easily be mistaken for internet speed.

In agreement with the rest of the posters, and for the sake of the TechTips part, I recommend a visible disclaimer, or a quicktechie episode displaying the difference between network and internet.

Aside from the above, excellent content, quite useful for Scrapyard NAS storage setups on the cheap.

My only other complaint. LinusShortTips? What dummyhead came up with this? He should be taken out back, and beat in the head with a glowstick.

@nicklmg the video thumbnail says "ITS CHEAP AND ACTUALLY WORKS!"

it isn't always a cheap solution and it doesn't always work for people. it's not a plug and play technology.

I guess LTT is really going for entertainment now and throwing facts out the window piece by piece

You just don't do it. It does not increase your internet speed; it simply increases the speed between two machines. For most people, this means completely isolating the two machines.

It's a stupid video that has lead to more confusion than entertainment for many.

I just thought id mention that if you live in the UK this is still expensive thing to do. Linus buy his NIC;S for $40 us dollars each but in UK eBay they average £70 - £150 pounds each witch is $100 - $210 dollars each.

And the site ware Linus gets his cable from although he's bang on with is pricing the company doesn't ship internationally so you will have to source one from else ware witch I bet will be more expensive.

but id still like to thank linus for showing us how to do it I will defiantly be buying some NIC's and giving it a go.

So this is the setup I'm thinking of going for. What do you guys think? @nicklmg

Card options:

option 1 http://ebay.to/1LMohiG

option 2 http://ebay.to/1QCjQg2

cable

http://bit.ly/1TKfeXo

Usage: transferring 4K raw video files and premiere pro projects between our two editors etc...

Update: Ended up getting one of both cards. We decided to go fiber as those cables are much less expensive than direct attach copper and the top card option had fiber-optic connectors in both slots. The seller for the first option only had one card available so we grabbed one of the cards from the second option to cover that. we popped one of the two fiber connection modules out of the option 1 card and put it into the second card to finish everything up. #GoingFiberFTW!

Public service announcement: Finding drivers for and Emulex 10gb SFP+ NIC for windows 10 is nearly impossible. Both cards come up as unidentified PCI ethernet cards. We did, however, find working drivers for both cards on windows 7.

@LinusSebastian If you got your cards working on windows 10 I would be forever grateful if you showed me where you found the drivers.

Linus made me curious

and i just Had to see if i can really transfer the whole porn collection from one pc to another the 10 Gbps way.

Went on ebay and bought the network cards : 2 HP MELLANOX 10GB CONNECTX-2  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/361717544129

And a 5m sfp cable : Sealed 5m CISCO SFP-H10GB-CU5M http://www.ebay.com/itm/142107368609

Struggled a bit to install one of the cards in the second pc... since it would not recognise it in the pci-e x4 slot (worked fine in the pci-e x8)

Installed the 4.80 driver : http://www.mellanox.com/page/winof_matrix?mtag=windows_sw_drivers

Disabled the 1gbps network... installed ram disk... even disabled network throttling and did the 10 gb network card tweaking

transfering files on ram disks i get an average of 150-200 mB/s

transfering files on the actual hdds (all wd black caviars) : i m having a 100 mB/s average

So... what gives ? what did i miss @nicklmg ?

ps. both pcs run win 7 x64 sp1

@Gatekeeper01 Can you tell me where you got the Windows 7 Drivers for the Emulex cards? I bought those cards thinking this would be easy, boy was I wrong.  Any help is appreciated. :-)
