@W-L can I wire RGB LED's this way? it would only be a few leds if it makes a difference and its from this Deepcool RGB kit.  I'm looking into doing a full custom deal since I need more than this kit can provide but I want to get some practice in first since I've never soldered on LED strips

For the Deepcool kit yes that can be done since they are just standard SMD5050, you can also get crimp on T junctions like this if you don't want to solder. Just be sure to strip back the clear waterproofing so they can make contact with the copper pads:

Does anyone have a template for a custom I/O shield? I just need the basic dimensions without the plug cutouts (I'll figure out how to get those done at some point).

Looking for something I can print out at a 1:1 scale and use as a guide to cut it out of acrylic

While I don't have a 1:1 printout here is are a couple of good resources, for rear IO including PCI-E dimensions.

This FAQ turned out great! The old one was pretty bad if I'm going to be honest.

Note though: You can also wire up 5v/12v RGB/single color LED strips to Molex connectors (if you cut up an old Molex-SATA adapter). I've done it with my strip and it works great.

Didn't want this thread dying and it hasn't given me the message saying that it's "quite old".

Been toying with the idea of making a DIY testbench using some of the older more useless cases I've got laying around, similar to the following LTT video.

Sparks are of course, cool.

I haven't done much planning for that, but I'll most likely be referring back to this thread once I start planning as well as when I start to explore the PC modding space.

Hey man, thanks for this super cool guide. However i have a question for you:

See, i have an EVGA GTX 1080 SC GPU and i'm planning on mounting it vertically to give my rig a fresher and super cool style. However, my rig is mainly black and red themed (although i lately found a cool RGB LED combination of dark blue case lights and bright red on everything else that creates a lovely black, blue and magenta mix... Very CyberPunk style dude haha) and the GPU's LEDS under the shroud are pure bright white...

20190209_042822.thumb.jpg.5601907265e31c011e782ff2e7506fe6.jpg

I don't think they'll lool bad on my tower, but i was wondering if there's a good way to paint them to change the light's color... I was thinking of going a super easy cheap way and just use sharpies... But 1) I don't think they are going to produce a strong enough effect 2) i think the heat around the GPU might make the sharpies ink fade or even worse 3) catch on fire!. I even thought of using some sort of thin colored plastic "paper" and just slide it between the shroud and the LEDs, but again the heat would probably melt it. Some nail polish would also probably be a bad idea, as it's solvent is flammable and i don't know if it will resist any heat even if it has already dried off. Spraying paint on it would probably just completely obscure them so i don't think it would work ar all... Thus, so far sharpies seems to be the only (although not the best) option here. But, you are the expert.

So, any ideas?

I think you are over estimating how hot it has to be before there is a problem with sharpies or a plastic films before they start reacting, a GPU will get no where near hot enough for that to become an issue.

For a nice even light I would recommend to use a colored film, ideally sandwiched between the LED and the front diffuser that is currently there. So it would require you to take apart the shroud to get proper access, that way it will look very clean and as if it was original.

Thread still alive? Wanted to know what to do to soften, smoothen and blend in black metal if I was to cut a whole in the top of a PSU shroud so that GPU pin cables can be plugged directly from the bottom instead of having to go over the top of the GPU back down from the motherboard main holes. How would I do the finish so it looks like factory and no one cuts their fingers when they finger around the new cut hole.

Reference of someone else's build and how they've cut out holes but pretty much similar, just not as big.

Quick and dirty: black electrical tape

step up: gasket

alternative: 3D-printing a custom cable grommet if you own a 3D-printer and black TPU

Was thinking of some quick solutions like gasket tape but wow completely didn't think of hole grommets. Wonderful. I can find some premium nice shaped grommets and I can cut to size, install it, file out the sharp edges, place the gromet and it'll conceal the mess below the shroud, hide the silver metal and protect the fingers.
