Home Server Hardware

Hi guys,

I was thinking about the idea to buy a nas, but since I've never built a computer before, actually building a server should be more "educational".

So I'm asking your help to look for a cheap cpu and a cheap motherboard to build my first server.

Budget:

It's about 600/700€ for all the server. And I'm going to buy more hdd in the future.

Hardware I thought:

- 1x 120GB SSD (I already have it) that I can use for the OS. --> 0€

- 2x 4TB WD RED HDD --> 170€ x 2

- An Intel Xeon CPU (but which one?)

What I use it for:

- store movies, photos, music

- access it from a smart TV

- probably plugin an IPcam

- put online some little websites, or test virtual machine and so on..

What do you suggest me for these purposes? Which CPU, MB, PSU, Case, RAM, OS should I use?

Hope to talk with you sooner.

Sorry for my bad english and thank you everybody.

Richard.

iw ould use one of those low power xeons or a regular e3 if you can find one for cheaper.

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

For CPU I would recommend Xeon E3 1231 V3, It is a great CPU & will be perfect for your build. If you don't want to go such high end then probably you can just stick with i5 4460.

For MotherBoard:- You can go for any LGA 1150 board such as GIGABYTE B85M-DS3H-A  if you don't require ECC RAM. If you want ECC RAM then may be you can go for ASRock E3C224-V+.

RAM:- 8GB (2x4 GB)

Storage :- I recommend getting 2/3 WD Red 3TB Storage as these have the best per GB costs.

PSU:- Choose the most reliable PSU even if it costs more, trust me it will be worth it.

GPU:- if you choose to get the Xeon processor, then you will require a Graphics Card as the processor does not come with integrated Graphics, you can either get a MoBo with OnBoard Graphics or buy some cheap used GTX 610.

You can choose to get a RAID card if you want to have RAID 5 or 6, but I wouldn't recommend such complex stuff considering it is your first build.

Hi guys,

thank you for your reply.

A Intel Xeon E3 and a Intel I5 are still expensive.

Meanwhile a friend of mine helped me with the search and we find out these:

CPU: Intel Core i3-4150 (113,30€)

RAM: DDR3 Corsair Vengeance Pro 1600MHz 32GB (4x8GB) CL9 1.5V (154,90€)

MOBO: Gigabyte GA-H97M-D3H (82,70€)

HDD: Seagate NAS HDD 4TB 3.5" 64MB 5900RPM SATA3 (139,30€ x 4)

This mobo also supports raid so my idea is to start with raid 5.

With all this stuff we are over 900€ and PSU and case are still missing!

Now we can't find a case which is suitable for a nas / server.

What do you think about our choose?

Bye!

Perhaps look into an older i3, the 2100 with mainboard is sth like 100 bucks or less.  And you don't need that much RAM, go with 8-16gb. I would recommend software RAID instead of Hardware ( you have to get the exact mobo to rebuild it, with software you can just import the old drives on a new PC)

This is a cheap solution you could upgrade if it's too weak

You can try looking int HP Microserver Gen8.

They have 4 Bays for HDD (but there is enough space to but an additional SSD in it), it is available with a Xeon ... and has buildin IP-KVM (ILO4)

And those doesn't cost that much...
