I completely get what you two are saying but for two things to break just after each other and with the room being as smoggy as it is I think that the affect of the vaping which would've have been going through his computer to be considered as a possibility at least.

i get what you saying i just don't think that's what killed it tbh the humidity maybe but i don't see the humidity even in a small room being raised by a tiny little stick i mean look a humidifier those things are huge

Seen a lot of NVIDIA cards with this kind of residue which is from the manufacture process.

My own GTX 580 has Flux residue around the VRM area which is harmless.

I know and it could've been that but I personally never saw it so I can't really comment on it

If it's on any kind of solder, it's not harmless.

if it is e-juice, its properly VG (vegetable glycerin). VG tends to leave a thin layer of oily residue (but then he would have had to be cloud chasing directly in to the case) still VG and PG (the 2 major ingrediens in e-juice) are not conductive by them self, have to confess i dont know if that changes when you mix them.

The elder son (he's 19 I think) vapes in his room a lot and has recently had a PC catastrophe where his PC has been completely destroyed his entire PC which includes a Titan X and I don't know what CPU but I'm sure it'll be expensive to replace. He PC was broken by his vaping we think as it makes his room really really humid and it seems like the only valid explanation.

I think we're going to have to agree to disagree here because I'm still on the fence to whether he was very unlucky with random component failure or the vaping was the cause.

E juice is mosly PG (Propylene glycol), with a mix of  VG ( Vegetable Glycerin). There are some 100% VG e juices because VG produces more vapor. Some also have a small amount of distilled water in them. Propylene Glycol is completely harmless and inert. It is the same thing that they use in asthma inhalers. Technically you could vape albuteral and it would be the same thing as taking a breathing treatment. Breathing treatments are distilled water and albuteral.

 

Also if you vaped right into your computer it would probably cool it. Since the evaporating liquid has a cooling effect

 

E cigs are basically tiny fog machines. When you go to a club or event and they have fog machines running they use basically the same liquid (minus the flavoring and nicotine) and work in the same way. So if vaping could ruin a computer imagine the havoc a fog machine would have on audio equipment for a DJ. I have never heard of a fog machine ruining electronics like expensive audio equipment or cameras.

 

And there isn't enough water content in the vapor for it to condense and short something out. It evaporates way before it condenses.

 

If the film on his computer was caused by vaping it would be all over his monitor and his keyboard as well. Like his monitor would be dripping with it if he vapes as much as you say.

 

The film in his computer is from something else. And the fact that two things failed at the same time or within a short amount of times is not odd at all. It is actually to be expected. Normally when one thing fails often one or two other things fail with it or follow shortly.

Heat, mismatched card for motherboard, poor or bad power supply or a power spike would all very easily cause this kind of damage. I would imagine to run a titan X you would need a pretty decent motherboard, good power supply and adequate cooling for the case.

 

Likely culprits would be bad computer ventilation causing extreme heat, overclocking stressing the system, components that are not matched well or crappy power coming out of the wall. Spikes and dips in your electrical system can really mess things up.

 

Or, sometimes stuff just breaks, its life. When I was a mechanic you would always hear " Well it worked fine yesterday.". Yup, that is how stuff works, it works until it doesn't. A voice doesn't come on and say "Hey tomorrow I am going to crap out on you" It just craps out.

I really doubt it was any of this though with the exception of heat and even then I think that's pretty unlikely.

Well I now think it was the vaping again.

 

So I was talking to a friend from college and he's knowledgeable about vaping (he is somewhat involved in the manufacture of the liquid stuff) and he said in 32ml of liquid there is around 2ml of water based flavouring so I guess if there's a large enough amount of vapor in the air it could cause a short circuit.

I still don't think so. The flavoring could be water based, or it could be oil based, depends on the flavoring. And 32 ml is a pretty large bottle of E liquid. I would say most average vapors that vape consistently might vape 5 to 10 ml of E liquid a day. So the actual amount of liquid vapor in an hour or so of vaping is almost none. By the time the device heats the liquid to vaporize it, then you inhale it and ex hale it there simply isn't enough moisture content to condense. It all completely vaporizes into the air.

 

Have your friend vape into a tissue or onto a mirror or something similar. See how much liquid actually condenses on the material.  I am going to bet it will be nothing. If it is anything it won't be more than normal breathing. Everyone exhales moisture when they breathe normally anyway. Then when you factor in the heat of the components in the machine I am sure it won't condense.

 

I have vaped directly into my computer before, from my mouth right into the case fan. It left no residue or condensation on anything.

 

Without seeing or knowing exactly what all the components are in the machine it is really hard to say what could have caused those failures. However it could be as simple as that video card or other components were too much for the particular motherboard or power supply. Even though the video card has a power connector it still feeds power through the PCIE slot. And if it was more than that motherboard could handle it could have easily caused both parts to fail. Especially if he was toying with overclocking or voltage settings. And I am going to find it VERY hard to believe that someone that would be using that GPU hasn't played with tweaking their computer a little bit.

 

Theoretically if you had a microwave, fridge or something else that draws a lot of power and kicks on and off on the same circuit as your computer the fluctuations in line power could ruin a system. This is why a lot of people run a UPS or line conditioner on expensive electronics like computers and home theater systems.

 

Basically stuff breaks, it just happens. RMA it or chalk it up to experience and move on. If I paid that  much money for a video card and it failed I would be trying to get it replaced.

It was a asus maximus crosshair v with some 8 core fx chip (i think 9590) being cooled a corsair H100 gtx (which didn't leak and is still working and It's being powered by corsair rm1000. I have no idea why he got an amd chip but whatever.

 

I still am sure what it is tbf but he thinks it was the vaping so now he vapes in the toilet which is very normal....
