do DDr4 compatible CPUs require ddr4 ram

so i am buying a cpu (Intel Core i5-6600) but it says ddr4 on the intel website.

I already have a ddr3 motherboard and ram.

what do i do?

:(:(

If u have a skylake mobo for this cpu, which supports ddr3, then it should work, BUT it's recommended to go for ddr4 ram, if u've decided to rush into skylake.

Also note, that it can be ddr3-L, not just a ddr3.

The CPU will work with DDR4 and DDR3L

Intel Ark Specs ark.intel.com

What MOBO do you have? I am assuming it is LGA 1151

First sky lake processor works on low volt memory ( 1.2v) which are DDR4 and DDR3 L (L for LOW), and DDR3 and DDR3L are      almost same except DDR3 works on 1.5v. So you can put DDR3 into DDR3L slot and your computer will run but that high volt     memory ( DDR3 ) will destroy your SKYLAKE CPU over time acting as a slow poison. So' use only DDR3L and DDR4. Another thing is that , since you are buying a new sky lake processor it is better to use new gen ram also , i mean DDR4

" I already have a ddr3 motherboard and ram." You are sounding like, you are talking about your old mobo. So please check what is your mother board socket is  because skylake processor works on LGA 1151 socket and compatible chip set are Z170, H170, H110, B170, Q150, Q170

if you are having hard time to find socket and chip set than tell us your mother board model no.

First, I hope your motherboard is a socket 1151 board, otherwise you can forget about skylake. Second if it is a socket 1151, I hope the ram you got is ddr3 low voltage kit, otherwise your ram is useless.

Please let us know what specific motherboard and ram you have. Otherwise we can only give board answers like this.

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB
