Not enough to go off.  Please post pictures or explain if there was anything that happened that might make you concerned...

My build:  https://www.digitec.ch/de/ShopList/Show?shopListId=FED29B7299DE7D7B75F808FC3096A5F.

This is basically my problem:  On startup the pc goes on, cpu and case fans go on, graphics card Logo goes on fancy case LEDs aswell. they al stay on and function

Then my Asus z170 pro gaming mobo cycles through the debug LEDs (not an actual screen but 4 separate LEDs):

1. CPU LED goes red, then after 1 sec switches off (CPU is gud)
2. DRAM LED goes red, then after 1 sec switches off (DRam is gud)
3. VGA LES goes red, then after 1 sec switches off (GPU is gud)
4. BOOT DEVICE LED goes on and stays on

PC does not post anything on my display connected through hdmi on the mobo

if we can fix this i will send you a steam giftcard!

Here you can c where the led is situated.

Hi, I meant can you please send a picture of your actual installation so I can look at the connections.

Unfortunately, since you are unable to even get into the boot menu, at this point you are very limited in what you can do, and need to double check to make sure everything is connected properly and seated firmly.

I might be just one of the unfortunately situations where you need to RMA.  However, here are the steps I would take:

-Verify all you power connections.

-Make sure you CPU cooler is properly installed, including not too much or too little thermal paste.  You don't need much more than a grain of rice.

-Reseat your RAM.  If you have not already, try slot 2 and 4.  If you have it there now, try the other slots.

-Clear the CMOS.

Try again and report.

Yes, the battery you see on your motherboard is for the CMOS. Some motherboards have a button either on the MB or on the back IO panel to clear it, but you can also remove the battery for 20 seconds to clear.

Is that custom braided power supply cable, or did that come with the PSU?

Well, that ads a whole new level of potential failure points if they pinned it incorrect.  I would try with your stock cables first! Then if everything works, then move to custom so you can make sure that is not the cause.

Also, I cannot tell from the picture, but it looks like you might not have the CPU power 8pin connector installed.  To verify, is the 8 pin plugged into the board (see picture below)?

Because modern boards have so many checks and fail safes that if it detects anything abnormal, it will stop from performing or continuing to prevent damage to the system.

Here is what I would do:

-Try starting with only one RAM stick plugged in (your manual will say which slot is the best, mine says use DIMM #2).  Switch out the RAM stick to a different one.

-Reinstall using the default cables.  If they happened to accidentally pin one of the power cables wrong, you could be delivering power to somewhere that shouldnt get it, or visa versa.

Again, since you are not even getting it to post, you are limited to, and need to, rule out all the connectivity issues.

so what i did is: start with one ram stick in dimm 2 as my manual says, then i tried 2, then i took apart the cablemod cables, and jsut hoocked up the case fan header/hub and the cpu cooler with one sata then the hdd and ssd with two seperate sata cable and plugged the cpu power cable and the mobo cable in. the stock ones and still the same issue.

Isn't there in the manual written what could be the problem if the led is red? If it isn't or you already tried it, try calling asus to see if the have a solution for you.

so wouldnt you go to a specialist and let them assemble the pc, you are pretty sure that it is the mobo? so it couldtn be because of any other parts? I saw a same problem and he got a new mobo and it worked so would you also do that

thx man rly appreciate your help

it was my first time build but im certain that i connected everything correctly and the cableing as i told you i changed. so would you send it back or let a specialist assemble the pc and find the problem?

i rly want to give something back low battery...a ynthing for your help. so what would you do?

If you are confident that you have everything hooked up properly, I would RMA. If you read tons of reviews on sites, you will see that unfortunately this happens sometimes. I personally wouldn't pay to have someone else hook it up.  The fact that you are getting power but wont post means you likely have it hooked up right, but we tried to trouble shoot anyway just in case and try to avoid the RMA process if we could.

I really appreciate the offer, but I am happy to help.  Just try to help someone else out in the future and pay it forward :)

I am well aware that this is 3 years old.
I'm responding because I was having not this exact issue but similar issue this weekend with my computer not getting past the ASUS logo a.k.a POST screen and I couldn't get into BIOS.
I started with all the more involved measure when in hindsight I should have started with the simple stuff.
And when googling I found this post, and no answers except "RMA" it, which to be fair is an OK thing to do at that point.
I did:
- CMOS reset
- Reseated the RAM

- Removed the CMOS battery and done a CMOS reset again.
At this point I noticed the Boot_device_led lighting up solid red. So I removed all SATA cables from the motherboard. Still the same, red light and stuck on POST screen.
At this point I was dumbfounded, I thought to myself a USB devices surely can't be the culprit.
So I removed everything including the ethernet cable except my mouse and keyboard.
And it booted to BIOS setup.
So after eliminating webcam, hub and printer by plugging them in one by one between PC shutdowns.
I narrowed it down to PS4 controller.
Now I don't know if it's just a wierd error or if the cable or USB connector is faulty, but removing the controller fixed my problems.

TL;DR
Removing a USB device fixed my issue, a PS4 controller to be specific.

PC specs:
Intel i7 6700K
Corsair Vengeance LPX red 2x8GB (16GB)
Nvidia RTX 2070
Intel 250GB SSD
Samsung 750 EVO 500GB SSD

I had the same issue as this post. Adding a comment to say how I fixed it in case anyone else runs into the same issue. My computer was running a game normally then crashed at random. For me, unplugging my ssds did not fix the issue, but unplugging my CD DVD drive did. It slipped my mind that the CD DVD drive is also technically a boot device as the error led indicates. Hopefully this comes in handy to someone eventually!

I came across this thread after a Google search, and your exchanges helped me a lot.
Thank you!
Now it's my turn to reply to this thread.
The BOOT_DEVICE_LED on my Asus Z170 Pro Gaming motherboard was on, and the screen was stuck on boot with the Asus logo.
As SwedishFreaK says above, I just had to unplug my USB gamepad (Microsoft controller, in my case) for my PC to accept to boot.
I then reconnected the controller, and this did not prevent future boots.
