My first Homelab +Network update

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

So I guess this is kind of a "weird story" but here it is... :D

First I somehow ended up buying a 3 Node server with each node having 2xAMD Hexacores + 24GB RAM

Then I bought a Server Rack, and when I picked it up I got a 2U server + a UPS with it for free :D

I guess I gotta make that homelab then :)

I am not yet sure how the setup is going to be, but I have at least temporarily dropped my first thought which was esxi and I am looking into proxmox atm.

Storage:

ATM:

3x Seagate 2TB Drives

3x WD 3TB Surveillance drives

1x 8TB long term drive

1x 4TB WD Red

4x 250GB SSD's (Might add two more or trade them for 800GB drives)

Looking into adding 4x 6TB WD Red's

Is this something you want to see or not?

Please let me know if you want to see this buildlog, and comment if there is something you are wondering about :)

Current status:

Waiting for electricians to wire the room where the rack is (could have done it myself, but Norwegian laws are quite strict)

Meanwhile/current pics:

This is the server I got for free (Haven't even checked specs, only know it works and it has a Xeon (4 core 8 thread if I remember correct))

On the right you can see the UPS I got

Here is the 3 node server (those are 3x250GB SSD's on top of it)

The Server Rack in the room that it will be placed in, I have taken off some panels, I don't know if I am going to keep it this way or put them back on

It's not going to stay in that position though, it is just temporary for storage.

I am also going to do a bit of a network upgrade :D

This is the router I have, and will be staying with:

My plan is to at least have 1 24 Port switch

This is two Ubiquiti AC AP's and a toughswitch.

I also have 2 of these point to point units that I don't know if I'm going to use for something yet.

Wow ! very good choice, I have the SG300-28 very good product as well. If you are in that price range I would consider a switch with 10Gbit capabilities for the future ;)

I am not really "in that price range" :P as I am getting it for free from work

But I've already had the option to go 10gbit with a quanta switch for 400$, but I ended up passing on it, as I don't see myself "needing" 10gbit in the close future, and I think that there might be other tech in the future that is cheaper and better before I need 10gbit :)

I see, Well you have tons of ports to do link aggregation and I'm with you that I do not expect 10Gb in the near future in my home lab :D

Ahh yes, I remember my dumpster diving days. Worked at a place with they would throw out entire Juniper rigs and CS servers. Half the NOC had their own PBXs at home all built from "free" parts. So wasteful. Its like as soon as you become a IT you lose your brain.

Tbh not that much haha :D

The first server with 3 nodes was like 700$ but I got half of it back from the postal system that dropped it even though it only got a few "scratches"

Then I paid 200$ for the rack which contained the other server and the UPS xD

The Mikrotik router is paid for by my parents company as I still live at home while doing a 2 year paid internship, and that was about 600$ or smth.

The switch costs over 1000$ but I'll get that for free ^^

Dont forget about security here, Sophos UTM and XG Firewall should be good choices, otherwise Symantec and Kaspersky offer really solid protection from malware. :)

Tbh the firewall in the mikrotik is good enough imo, but if I was to consider something atm, it would probably be this because of integration: https://www.ubnt.com/unifi-switching-routing/usg/
