To answer your first question on recycling e-waste depends on the country (and state to state/ province to province) you live in. (The information here may not apply to your location)
The collector (in this case Bestbuy) will send the waste to a facility which will break down the product separating the product from each other:
(main boards into one bin, metals casing and heat sinks into another, wires, processors and ram (for the gold), hard drives for destruction, and other stuff for further sorting and disposal)
After the product has been sorted they process it (extracting any valuable metals off the product) and removing any hazardous products like mercury.

they send the stuff they can't process to other facilities like batteries and crt monitors.
