If pascal (next series of NVIDIA cards) doesn't come out by then, then get a 970 or better. If the NVIDIA Pascal cards come out, then see what the prices and technologies are like.

the 900 series prices will go down when pascal comes out, so if your budget can have a 970 now, you could probably get a 980 or 980ti when the prices drop after pascal comes out.

MSI GE72 Apache Pro-242 - (5700HQ : 970M : 16gb RAM : 17.3" : Win10 : 1TB HDD : Razer Anansi : Some mouse) - hooked up to a 34UM58-P (WFHD) in dual screen

The you definitely want to stay with Nvidia. Less driver overhead (less load on the CPU which means less stuttering)

My advice is get a used 970, or a EVGA 970 as EVGA gives you 90 days to trade it in and apply the money spent to upgrade to a new card.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

How much would you say the 980 and 980ti drop?

prices of older series have never dropped in the past. Don't know where people get this idea. They always remain the same and increase eventually due to supply&demand.

No they won't actually, not unless AMD launches something new that contests them before the 1080 and 1070 are out.

And no idea, don't have a crystal ball.

Uh wrong.  Nvidias "older" gen ALWAYS gets a price reduction when they launch a new GPU series.

No, they just go EOL and it's up to the stores what to do with their shelf-stock.

They don't get a pricecut on the MSRP.

Here in the Netherlands, stores usually don't get rid of them at bottom dollar. It would hurt them too much.
