Windows 10 sends your PC data 5500 times to Microsoft and Non-Private IPs

This is about right leaving my PC on with nothing running (even in the background) And with nothing running my network activity lights were going crazy, Like I was downloading a file.

Just because you're not doing anything wrong now, doesn't mean that info gathered on you can't be used against you in the future.

Not all people will understand how collecting metadata on large number of individuals can lead to. They won't need the actual content in order to infer what you're doing with all the massive metadata they're collecting.

Ehhh, it's not like they are stealing my personal data. I don't care if they take OS data, if it helps make it better, so be it. I've had less and less issues with Windows 10 lately than I was in the early days, so I'm guessing they are putting that info to good use. Beside, even if they connect that many times, it's not like they are sending GB worth of data over.

That said, a bunch of those IPs are blocked in my router's firewall anyway, so...

So what? What are they going to get from me? My name, my email, my SSN? I don't keep anything valuable enough on my PC that it has to be on paper. They want to see my save files for some games or my dank memes in my photos folder, go right on ahead.

There are plenty of programs out there designed to disable telemetry from windows 10 and office products if you don't want to do it by hand you can even go so far as to remove the telemetry service without any downsides to the normal operation of windows or you can just use an alternative OS.

2. Even though I'm a new to the forum, I know what it's like to be on informative forum and follow the guideline. The topic I posted here is an update to what we discussed 4 months ago. Ergo, I mentioned it has been proven in November last year but we didn't know how much or how constantly the telemetry is. 5500 times is a big number in only 8 hours period.

 

3. Pretty much I feel that this telemetry is the same feature we agreed upon with Google and Facebook. However, due to it being on OS level and the lack of transparency from Microsoft in divulging the information, I wonder if it is seem ethical or even invasive to do so.

Look, I don't claim it is my article. I just share it from Forbes and summarized it. Where there is now a debunk article, I will gladly read it.

HOWEVER, what about the connection to Non-Private IPs? What about the rest of the 2100 connections that the article didn't "debunk"? We need Microsoft to be more transparent about this.

I find this statement ridiculous. You make MS sound so greedy. Funny thing is we didn't have to pay for an upgrade to W10, nor do we really have to pay for any of the Windows updates. I find it completely mind blowing that Windows (any of them) doesn't have a subscription based pricing model for the home users. 

 

In my opinion, freedom isn't exactly free. Everything comes with a price, even the things that sound like they are free.

you know what...... just accept the the world we live in. people want your information for many reasons, good and bad. I am using windows 10 and it is pretty much a faster not improved windows 10. I hated the start menu and installed classic shell. I just fixed the things I didn't enjoy and have come to terms with Microsoft taking my data.

if you haven't realised..... Google continuously tracks you on the internet and uses that information to present you with ads relating to your interests and they use your data to bring up information that pertains to something you search up often.

so every company watches you. they have been for a while.

I was just quoting phrases in the article.

I am not sure about those 2100 connections, but if they're public IPs then it should be easy to figure out what they do (or would do, in case they actually got the connection).

 

The article definitely states, correctly, that the claim of "sending your data 5500 times" is misleading.

Microsoft made Windows 10 a free upgrade because they make money so long as you're using it.

 

- telemetry and collected data is shared with advertising groups, who pay for statistics

- Windows 10 has Windows Store built in, where MS receive 30% of all sales

- closer integration with MS services (One Drive, Outlook, Groove Music, Cortana, and more) means that more people are likely to use those services, overall making MS money

- Cortana offers Windows Store suggestions, and there are other advertisements in Windows 10, as well as pay-to-unlock features, like solitaire

 

Microsoft giving away Windows 10 as a free upgrade is not a sign of non-greediness, but a result of Microsoft calculating their expected most profitable route, and making a monetized release of Windows and then giving it away to get as many people using it, generating perpetual daily revenue from its users, seemed to MS to be the most profitable course of action. Getting people on W10 means that MS can even make money from people who pirate Windows.

Imagine if the free services (like Google, Facebook, etc.) all asked for money instead of your data. Would you be more inclined to support them by directly paying them to continue to maintain their services/software? I would think that doing that would just completely destroy the ecosystem. The point of the post was not a complaint about integration, but that the integration brings Microsoft money - and so Windows 10 is not being given freely out of generosity, but to profit the company.

I agree if CheesusFreak would actually let the connection goes through, the number of connections would be small though. By the way, he/forbes article claimed 5500 connections were made. That guy should make another test with numbers of connections that went through.
