Vintage '02 Quad core workstation

SteinerW

Got my hands on a vintage Quad core workstation... Well its 2 single core xeon CPUs with hyperthreading but what ever. 2.4 GHz... I'm going to do some benchmarks on it and some gaming. We'll see how it runs Half-Life 2 in a few days. It has 2 GBs of ram and a quatro FX-1000. Lets see how this 14 year old PC holds up.

I'm putting a video together comparing this to a PC with a Pentium D 930 at 3GHz from '06 to see how it holds up. Should be interesting.

What are your guy's thoughts? Can it run one of the most demanding games of its time?

Turns out this system has linux on it. I'll have to get drives form a different system that runs windows XP.

Why not keep Linux on it?

No it isn't.

I'm all for the poke at AMD every once it a while, but that is just ignorant.

Thoughts?  I think the K1 will crush it :D

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

yes. I'll probably6 just bring home the other system. There's another computer almost identical to his one that I can have with windows xp.

I might. I'm still going to get the other drives because these ones sound REALLY bad.

Maybe I'll bench the computer on linux and windows. I'm trying to find a PCI GT 520 or GT 610 to give the graphics the best change it's going to have.

Calling it vintage makes my dual socket PIII system sound pre-historic :P Also with that 930 you might be quite surprised on how well it has aged, 10 years has shown it's age on it but other than that decent performer, depending on what your doing :)

A shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist.

I think you'll be surprised at the performance. In older games that is.

(Edit: in a good way ;))

Almost as cool as my temps

2002 is not "vintage" but "obsolete".

Anything pre-1995 I consider a vintage computer.

Anyways, that's still kind of cool. I wasn't aware that there was a quad core Xeon that far back.

~` please , don't let my whole life burn down `~

- why can't i just focus right now? -

; i'm tired ;

That's 2 physical Xeons, the other 2 threads are from hyperthreading (only a 20% performance boost due to being netburst). And I can say right now that I prefer my dual Pentium III rig to one based around Netburst P4/Xeon.

I was tricked into this thread!

I was gonna say, I remember blowing all my money on the first quad core cpu thinking I was the greatest man alive and that sure wasn't in 2002.

It may have been a bit of click bait... but it is a 4 thread computer. I'm getting another one tomorrow.... I'm going to buy a 4 cpu board, so then is will be a 4 core 8 thread computer from 2002

Sadly, both PCs are not the same. This system has F27 CPUs and the other one has F29 CPUs. I now have 2 GBs of ECC memory and windows XP. Lets play HL2.

2001? With the best pci graphics card you can get will probably be your 610 idea. Maybe you'll get something like borderlands (original) to run at all

I'm not even running a PCI GPU right now... AGP 8x all the way.
