PS2 Slim PC | Potentially Unpossible

Can you just use an M.2 SSD instead of a regular SSD? I know there are a few ITX boards with one on the rear or something.

Since I'm using a NUC as the base of the build, I want to keep the M.2 slot free so I have the ability to add a dGPU at some point. The massive performance isn't needed from an M.2 drive and the SATA cable should fit

You shoulda done it in a fat PS2, they're just big enough to squeeze in an ITX board

but its more fun if its tiny xD

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Small update, the NUC has arrived! The PS2s should be here tomorrow but Amazon being their brilliant selves estimate delivery some time next week, hopefully not since I really wanna test thing thing out.

IMG_3885.thumb.JPG.a862fb66d29e54af622e1IMG_3888.thumb.JPG.2872abd47d8dac1719833IMG_3903.thumb.JPG.6daf7e7ceca3eadb9cc46IMG_3920.thumb.JPG.4f1170f034ba3551deadc

Even in the case it's absolutely tiny, smaller than I expected (Especially since it has a 7mm drive bay in the bottom) which is nice. More impressive considering this i7 will turbo up to 3.4GHz and is supposed to come close to a desktop i3 in terms of performance.

IMG_3897.thumb.JPG.f8245060e82aa0419b097IMG_3899.thumb.JPG.bc5a1f23f516d7afe832bIMG_3900.thumb.JPG.c68335228f85d8611e124IMG_3921.thumb.JPG.233fd355f8f20b2752459

The power supply is equally tiny, and all attached to the plug which is nice for space. 65W output, and it's not much bigger than a 10W ASUS wall wart.

IMG_3901.thumb.JPG.79eba126076d06f189b53IMG_3902.thumb.JPG.d6802dd2b688a1b63c732

Easy enough to get inside to all the parts you would need, 4 screws that double up as feet and the bottom comes off. Sadly the SATA power connector is proprietary and doesn't look like it'll be happy running at spec amps but it's designed for low power drives.

IMG_3907.thumb.JPG.285f85ca61794633323abIMG_3908.thumb.JPG.73cc5a3f99c58e653f268IMG_3909.thumb.JPG.d127fc98e10de23570ef4IMG_3918.thumb.JPG.0fb1aba60a269ca717153

The board is even more impressive out of the case, nice selection of display outputs (Though full sized HDMI would have been nice) and plenty of USB ports including an always on port for charging. Will have to try and find one the right colour to go in the front of the PS2.

IMG_3912.thumb.JPG.1b7a35ecddf5efdf2812eIMG_3916.thumb.JPG.f8c0634663932b1b66f6a

The dimensions are the most impressive, 25mm thick from the highest port to the heatsink, only a bit bigger than a low profile PCI bracket. This should fit just fine in the PS2, even if I have to shave away and thin out the bottom a little.

I think £335 for a brand new, un-opened i7 NUC is a good deal. It was a tough toss-up between this and the Skylake i5 model, but I'd rather have the extra CPU performance than the PCIE 3.0 and DDR4.

---

Next update will come when the PS2s arrive, though the actual cutting may have to wait a while since I'm trying to work out borrowing a dremel from a friend. Thanks for reading! I'm getting hyped, this is actually looking possible

Since as of right now there's only an i5 on Skylake as of now, it actually gets worse GPU performance than the Iris 6100 that comes with the Broadwell i7 due to the higher TDP headroom in the i7 NUC (28W instead of 15W for the i5). I updated the OP with the specs, but it's an i7 5557U and I've got 8GB of 1600MHz RAM. I would have gone for 1866MHz but only a few kits work and I didn't want to risk it.

On other news the PS2s arrived, one is in far worse condition than the other but they're in a good state. Looks like I got an early model and a late model. Internally the later model is extremely impressive, Sony made loads of changes and it's surprisingly empty. I'll have the 3D Models and some pictures up tomorrow

Skylake iGPUs are great, but to beat the Iris 6100 I'd need something with GT540 ideally, the GT520 in the Skylake i5 is a bit slower even with DDR4. Though with an increased TDP limit it would be closer. If I ever built it again I'd go for a Skylake i7 which would have way better iGPU performance

Desktop it is, mobile ULV it's not even close. Should be in the realm of 50% faster than the HD 4400 I have in my Surface, even more with the TDP bumped up to silly levels. I'll throw out benchmarks when Amazon get off their ass and ship the RAM/SSD

Finally got around to sorting out my camera setup, no more bad pictures with the flash! Definitely need a macro lens at some point

Anyways, the newest of the consoles is in by far the best condition though has a slightly different internal layout, but not much to be cut on either one.

This has to be my favourite console to tear down so far, it's like it was actually made to come apart and go back together again. The screw covers lock in place without sticky stuff, most of the connections are just push fitted into sockets, the DVD side is on it's own anti-vibration mounts. It's all just modular and easy to swap out, it's so great.

Windforce 760 and the NUC for scale, the PS2 is absolutely tiny

IMG_0115.thumb.JPG.df42ade31659c789426dfIMG_0128.thumb.JPG.3ab635716ab437e7fa86a

Looks like the stuff from Amazon is going to be next week, so this weekend I'll try and get some prep done on the PS2, and it looks like I might have to solder the SATA cable directly to the board to get it to fit but nothing too difficult (Hopefully). A GPU might actually be possible in this thing all things considered, though it'd need a lot of adapters and a funky cooling solution to not melt it's way through the bottom of the case.

This build is truly one of a kind and genuinely brilliant. Instant follow!

I'm also in the plans on building a PC in a PS2 but in the original fat version, so now I just feel 1 upped...

However, keep up the good work and keep us updated! :)

The fastest GPU that might fit is the 750Ti LP from MSI, barely short enough but it's too thick to fit with the fans and I don't know how thick just the card and heatsink is. I'll do some messing around with mockups to see what could work but I doubt anything could fit internally that'd be worth it.

Preview of what to expect soon, I just need a new cable to actually use the damn thing and get some benchmark results out

750Ti is just fine for gaming, I have one in my build and it's great for easy and nice games at 1080p. I can run almost anything 1080p and even get good frame rates in games like GTA 5, Just Cause 2, and the like. It's a good card, and my is from goddamn PNY, so the MSI would be better!

Cable arrived today, had a chance to run some quick benchmarks before I transfer the NUC. Still need to update the BIOS for TDP control but thermals are an issue, but I'm impressed with the performance. Dat desktop i3 Cinebench in a 28W package
