1440P sweet spot?

I am looking for a graphics card(bang for the buck) that can run games smoothly (60FPS) at 1440p resolution

I am currently using a 750ti which can only handle 1080p

Pretty much this, nothing else other than the Fury X and Titan X will be able to max everything at 60FPS.

The next step down would either be a GTX 970, or an R9 390 / 390x. However, these cards can't drive everything at 1440p. Only some games.

Personal opinion is 390x/390 and the 980. But if you the best experience, 980ti is the way to go for running the newest titles at 60fps maxed.

I use a 970 at that resolution and I'm fine. A 390 will have slightly better performance and is in the same price range.

Would also like to mention that you can wait until the new cards come out this year and then buy the older ones at a discount if you're trying to save some money.

Right now Id go with the 390/390X for 1440p and bang for teh buck. DX12 support with all GCN cards...

It all depends on the games you play too.  If you don't play too many newer titles you can get away with lesser cards at higher resolutions.  My 970 will play some games just fine even up to 4k, obiously I'm not playing farcry4 or anything at that resolution, but cs:go or tf2.. lego games, etc..

Also depends on whether or not you're okay with turning some settings down.  If you're happy with a 750ti for 1080 performance you would probably be happy with something like a r9 380 for 1440 performance.  It's not ideal, but it's no 980ti either.

R9 390 is the closest thing to what you're asking for then, but you will have to sacrifice some settings compared to an R9 Fury or 980 ti.

The price of the card doesn't make sense anymore. $75 more for the 980Ti, and $100~ less for a card that performs just as good.

A 980ti is not $75 more than 980 in every country. So your point is valid but it may be the wrong advice if the OP doesn't live in the UK or or the USA.

Well.. I don't believe the OP has said anything about maxing out all the games, he wants a smooth 60fps. In that case I would go for a 390/x, or a Fury if you can afford it.

unfortunately 1440p isn't really a cheap resolution to run. I would say a minimum of something like a 390x.

I was going to say 2 290s in Crossfire, you could get them for around $350 combined if you find a good deal on them and then you get more power in games that support Crossfire

970 is best bang for the buck. 980 will do the job. 980ti if you want the best performance.

If anyone asks you never saw me.
