Where do you obtain your electrical parts?

Guest

I'm very interested in learning electronics. I can solder, understand the basics and can identify resistors by memory. However I don't see many good options for getting parts. The nearest radioshack (which is probably expensive) is about an hour drive away. Amazon sells some form of most parts but they're also very expensive, and usually don't have prime. I see some parts that look pretty cheap on ebay and aliexpress but they would take quite a while (1-3 weeks) to get here. Where do you get your parts from? Any suggestions where I should try looking?

If I need anything like that I go to a place called Sayal Electronics. I live in southern Ontario though, dunno if they have any other locations.

You mean the website or the actual store? The store is fairly far away.

I go to Sayal too, I don't know if there have any locations out of Ontario. Also much of he stuff is overpriced and I have seen them seeling mastercraft, husky and other stores products. Even Raspberry pi's in Element 14 boxes.

For certain things even ebay is good, i bought rgb leds for example, they all work but you don't get datasheets whitch is really bad. But it works if you want to do something really cheaply. Things like resistors don't need datasheets and there are some mixed bag thing whitch go for pretty cheap as well.

Since my dad has an electronics service I get to salvage A BUTTLOAD of components.

Whenever we need components that are somewhat harder to get, we usually order straight from distributors if we need bulk. Single units we sometimes order from Texas Instruments directly (kinda expensive but we get our money back after servicing is done) or we just go get ripped off at the local electronics store.

If you can source broken tech you can easily salvage components off those (I have a huge box of assorted connectors, from HDMI, DP, VGA to audio jacks and SCART plugs). You could also take a look on Arduino-centric sites. Most of them also sell component "kits" that have pretty much everything you'll most commonly need, from resistors, transistors, capacitors to small motors, switches and plugs. Investing in a couple of those kits could save you a bit of a headache and they usually come in a nice sorting box.

Mouser is my main go to source.

Mostly I work on tube amplifiers and FX pedals, so after them it is Antique Electronics Supply and Small Bear electronics
