I want to touch on a subject and I hope I don't get into trouble from any mods as I'm not sure if it's okay to talk about this, Piracy, does it kill a console? as we all know piracy has been around since well forever, it's affected (to my knowledge) every game console up to this generation, from what I understand this generation has up to this point (as far as I know) been unaffected (the consoles have remained un-cracked) and I think that's fantastic, the reason I'm saying that is because I believe everyone involved in making games should be paid fairly for their hard work, why should the freeloaders out there be allowed to play paid-for games for free (illegally), I believe this gives the big three (microsoft, sony and nintendo) power to say to gamedevs launch your game on steam and it's likely it'll be cracked in a few hours/days, launch your game on our platform and enjoy no freeloaders, or something along those lines.

Consoles aren't "uncracked". Jtagging Xbox, jailbreaking PS3 (as for the Xbone / PS4, I haven't followed them) have been pretty common things.

If I want to play a game and can´t afford to buy the whole damn console plus game I´m going to emulate it.

You think consoles haven't been cracked, umm no a lot of them have been cracked and or jail broken.

 

OH this gen, well the wii U has an emulator, and as stated the ps4 has had linux forced on it

Well lets just say they got linux running on a PS4 so yeah not uncracked

Piracy wouldn't be nearly as much of an issue on PC, or console, if developers would be more transparent about their practices, as well as offer a free preview / demo. This won't stop your music and movie pirates, but for games it would certainly help. Open, honest and fair developers see far less piracy than AAA developers who rehash the same formula every year with increasingly worse performance and optimization year-over-year. I will continue to support piracy in this regard for as long as developers milk their customer base for all they're worth.

I know with the original Xbox piracy was really easy to do, I modded my original xbox to save games to the hard drive(I owned the games) so I didn't have to get off the couch to swap discs haha. But I know most people just rented the games and ripped them, then returned it. Install a big enough hard drive and you're set.

 

With the Xbox 360 it was a lot more complicated and rare to do unless you got an older machine with older firmware and had all the necessary tools to JTAG it. Even then you could never take the console online unless you had some preventive measures while the original Xbox could be brought online without much stopping it. Though there are/were ways to rip the discs to your PC and then burn a modified version and trick the console into accepting it, this allowed for mostly modded CoD lobbies and Guitar Hero 3 had a built in "auto-play" you could enable so you could 100% any song on any difficulty without pushing a button(I did this one, really fun and funny).

 

I have yet to see any current generation consoles be modified, which kinda saddens me since it allows more control over the device, but Microsoft at least has gotten a lot better preventing these things. I'd be less worried about piracy and more worried about publishers ruining this market. Things have gotten pretty shakey these past few years, but it looks like it's getting better, we really don't want another video game crash.

 

As for your comment about Steam games getting craked, I'm not going to lie, it does happen and it's fast, but this doesn't even come close to hurting profit margins on PC. The devs/pubs saying it does know it doesn't, because if it was a serious issue they'd just stop releasing on PC as a whole, but they don't, because it doesn't really hurt them whatsoever. Ubisoft continues to release AC on PC even after years of calling 90%-95% of PC players "thieves", if that statement were even close to be true then they would have killed Uplay and never released a PC game again.

In the long run maybe, but during the console lifespan? Piracy is often cited as one of the main reasons why the Dreamcast failed. Because it was so easy to pirate so early in its life publishers became less interested in releasing their games. Something which started a positive feedback loop. Piracy keeps the Dreamcast alive today but it did also help kill the Dreamcast

Honestly, I've pirated a couple games before, but all ones I already owned. When I was young, I gamed exclusively on PS3, which was awesome. Later I moved to PC, and I felt it insulting that I was expected to spend money buying an entirely new copy of Skyrim, just to carry on enjoying the game I had sitting in my lounge already.

No. Piracy wasn't the main reason the Dreamcast died. It kind of was a reason, though. It mainly died because Sega poured pretty much all of their money into it, up until almost the brink of bankruptcy, and the PlayStation 2.

 

That niche community is actually larger than even I think.

I remember my friends waiting in line and getting home at like 12:05 and then joining my game and i was already a level 50 lol 

 

The 360 and ps2 were both hugely sucsessful and both were crackable. i could see the ps4 and xbox one eventually getting offline cracks but who even wants that im not counting out the chance of it being crackable and having all the features still but i feel like it is much less likely

It's not a console but a handheld.. But the Nintendo DS had a lot of flash cards (R4, Edge, DSTT) and the thing printed money for Nintendo still. It also didn't kill it, so piracy is not always bad for consoles.

The Wii also had easy piracy yet it still sold really well and games even sold very good.

Hell ds hacking was a freaking cultural norm. People loved it. Japan especially. Gotta love homebrew for the wii/wii u as well.
