Really stupid naming scheme to say the least

Confusing as hell, hope they revise the naming scheme before pushing it out.

The R thing in front of the name could actually be useful. Maybe some non-techy guy understands to not buy a graphics card based on how much it has memory if you'll just tell him to look at R8 and R9 in the name. Maybe.

I like the naming otherwise, but it would be more familiar if

290 = 299

285 = 297

280 = 295

275 = 287

270 = 285

and so on...

 

But I guess it wouldn't be as clear in long term. It's easier to have the same 5 number space between the names all the time. Also 290 leaves room for 295

Agree that if they were to rename R(Gen) (Tier)(SubTier) would be the way to go.

They should remove the R9, R8, R7 and just name it the R290, R285, R280.

I'd just skip the middle digit and call it an R9-85 for example
