Xeon Build 2.0 Code name Xenox.

Trey222

This is my second Xeon build. The first one ended in bitter pain when I could not get a post after assembling it. I believe it was the CPU that came dead but I just did not feel like diagnosing every part to I just returned/RMAed them. You can relive my pain here. https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/522048-xeon-build/ Anyways I have decided to ditch X58 and go with X79. The parts I am using are as follows

E5 2670 8 core 16 thread CPU I got for a solid 65 US

Asus X79 Sabertooth board for 210 US   Intel DX79SR  board for 160

8GB 1600MHz Kingston HyperX RAM for 30US (I plan to upgrade to either 16 or 32GBs in the future)

Powercolor PCS+ R9 390 for 280 US (I got it open box and I could not get it to post so I am currently getting a replacement.)

XFX Pro 850 Watt power supply I got used for 60 US

(Deepcool Captain 360mm AiO water cooler 90 US (I know it is overkill for this CPU but it was meant for overclocking an X5650 and at least I will be able to run the fans at a super low RPM)

250GB Samsung 850 Evo SSD 80 US

1TB WD Blue Hard drive 50US

All housed in the Fractal Design Define S I got for 60 US

23 inch 60Hz 1080p IPS AOC monitor 130

Cooler Master Devastator Keyboard and mouse 30 US (Not the best but I plan to upgrade later)

I have everything except the motherboard and GPU. This should be a pretty powerful build and I am exited to see how it turns out. I will be posting pictures of the build and the parts when they come. Have a great day.

P.S. I am calling it Xenox because I accidentally typed Xeon like that once and I liked how it sounded and I also can not think of anything else.

Awesome, the 2670 is an amazing chip for as cheaply as you can get them for. You got some great deals, I hope this build goes well!

Yes LGA2011 will be revived!

I just started a project with the 2680.

And I like the name Xenox.

I agree LGA2011 is a beast with these Xeons hitting the market for so cheap. Your Xeon build looks amazing. Also thanks I like the name too.

Also the RAM is pretty cheap by now. 150$ for 64GB DDR3 1600 with ECC.

Sadly the dual socket mainboards are still very expensive, like 500$. But at the same time, 64 GB DDR4 can easely cost you 500$ too.

Yeah the even the X79 motherboards are a little over 200. It feels weird having the CPU be one of the cheapest parts.

The cost of my two CPUs and the 64 GB RAM is hardly over the cost of the mainboard. Just insane.

When they upgrade ther data centers they have hundreds of used Xeons and TBytes of RAM. The supply of consumer MoBos can't keep up and the price skyrocket.

Yeah the E5 26xx was a popular data center chip in its day and I honestly think that there are far more of these Xeons then there are consumer boards and DDR3 ECC RAM is going way down in price.

I decided to go a different path with the MoBo. I got the Intel DX79SR. I went with this for a few reasons. 1. It was $50 cheaper. 2. It supports ECC RAM which lets me return my regular 8GB HyperX Fury RAM and get 16GB of ECC RAM which is surprising cheap on Ebay. Unfortunately the board is blue and my CPU waterblock and 3 fans for the 360mm rad are all red which means that the build will no longer be color coordinated.  However I can live with this.

@Stefan1024 Do you  know if there are anything that I should look for with ECC RAM? Like some spec that is not on regular DDR3.

There is registered and unregistered ECC memory as well as buffered and unbuffered.

Personally I looked for RAM that was qualified by Asus to work with my MoBo. As it was only 20$ more expensive than the other once I bougth it to prevent some hassle.

What is the difference between registered and buffered ram? I can not really find am answer when I Googled it.

If you use registered momory you can have more. My MoBo can do 256 GByte reg. but only 64 GByte unreg.

Just look for the memorylist provided by Intel (is there any, I haven't checked) and try to finde it for cheap. If there is non, google the specs of this memory and get the most similar one.

The CPU came today. It is a very big chip. I thought the X58 chips were big but they are a lot smaller than these chips. I also had an old pentium 4 laying around that is miniscule compared to it.IMG_20160208_145515.thumb.jpg.88efe0adb8

My thermal paste came today. It is a little while overkill for this Xeon but I don't care. 1455138703534-2138741264.thumb.jpg.97d02

Yes the good old days when intel actually cared about gamers ;)

Yeah this is one of that last consumer boards they made. It is a nice board however I just noticed it has no IO shield :(. I contacted the seller so hopefully I can get one. Not a deal breaker but a little annoying if I have don't have one.

Gorgeous board. Sadly Intel boards always lagged behind the best for overclocking but that won't affect you in any way :)

Thank you. Also they have, but this one supports ECC RAM which is nice.
