I think I've gotten two of the worst 970s for overclocking

So I just got a 1440p monitor and finally had a reason to overclock my gpus, but sadly found out that one of them can handle +90mhz and the other can handle only +75 before I have artifacts and blue screens. I'm pretty sure that binned gpu's tend to overclock well but I guess I just have shitty luck. Anyone else have issues with gigabytes g1 gaming line?

The card G1 is already overclocked by Gigabytes. +90 is very good if the card already has over +1300-1350 ish.

really? I remember back when I was looking I was seeing people with cards running +1400 but maybe that was just a few lucky scenarios

Not for noise. But they have been known to have GPU that managed to not get binned.

My friend could barely get above 1300 with his. It's a silicon lottery again. Don't push it if you're already getting blue screens.

Not really. The G1 is the best 970 for overclocking.

The G1 970 is the highest binned and beefiest 970 besides the HOF (HOF sucks tho)

I was under the impression the g1s were best clockers, but your clocks seem normal, I hit 1400 ish (prob more like 1450Mhz) on mine before shit hits the fan, I suspect I could hit more if I did a bios update/flash to allow more voltage, as even with afterburner voltage maxed my cards still don't exceed 55C on my loop

What are they boosting to? At +90 mine are just over 1500mhz

Perhaps your cards are choked. How is the airflow in your case?

Cards equipped with Elpida RAM are notoriously poor overclockers. The ones that came with Samsung chips are a lot more flexible. Even my 66% ASIC Windforce 3X card can hit +200C/+400M without flopping.

Check GPU-Z to see if you have Elpida RAM, it will show you in the Memory Type field. Another good bet is to check with Gigabyte for vBIOS updates. A lot of their GTX 970s have several and they make huge improvements since my card wouldn't even run right at stock without the update. Remember to follow Gigabyte's instructions and make sure you apply the updates to the proper vBIOS chip (there are two) by using the correct DVI port.

You can't judge a core by the memory type lol

 

@boboman342 has a 980 Ti that can do 1560 (maybe higher) yet his memory can only do +200 without training..

Top card is 1460 bottom is 1300, :^/ seems like they're just average but nothing special

My case fans+a reference GTX 970. And considering my card struggles to overclock as high as a lot of Windforce (non G1 Gaming cards), they are not binned properly.

GTX 970 G1 Gaming are far from the best.

My EVGA GTX 970 SC ACX 2.0 shits itself at anything above a 1367 MHz boost clock (which GPU Boost 2.0 takes to 1418 MHz).

I must be REALLY lucky with one of my MSI 970's I hit 1612 on the core without artifacting or crashing; with my second I got about 1582.

Every single GTX 970 Windforce owner that I've seen overclocking has had far higher overclocks on their cards than mine, and to top that all of, with those that show the ASIC score its a lot higher.

 

Edit: And to top that off, mine on idle is louder than my case fans at 75% and my Seidon 120V's water pump at 100%. With the load noise being audible through out most of the house.

Right, because one shit overclocker means the entire manufacturing process is the same..

 

And ASIC doesn't mean a huge amount with Maxwel.. Maybe Big Maxwell but not Tiny Maxwell

ASIC has very little impact with the 980Ti as well.
