Windows 10 Mobile has a cellular data eating bug

For those either with one of the newer Lumia phones, or if you are running on the pre-release version of Windows 10 Mobile on an existing handset, one nasty bug caught me out this month. Windows 10 Mobile includes Data Sense, which originally came back with Windows Phone 8.1, and this system tool monitors all network traffic and reports back usage over WiFi and Cellular. On my own Lumia 950 XL, I noticed I had used more cellular data in January than I had ever used in a single month before. Data Sense let me know that a process called “System” had used over 900 MB of cellular data in just 17 days. Beautifully vague as all bugs are.

Speaking with some other people that use Windows 10 Mobile, I found that it was not an isolated incident. Other users had been reporting the same issue, and in some cases they had used quite a bit more data than this. The culprit, it seems, is a setting which is on by default that backs up text messages to OneDrive, so that you can get them back if you get a new phone or wipe your current phone. It’s a feature that has been part of Windows Phone for some time, and I’ve always left it enabled. Disabling this setting reduces the cellular data usage back to normal. In the messaging app main window, hit the … in the bottom right corner, choose Settings, and turn off Message Sync. To be clear, backing up the text messages should only use a small amount of data, and really it should do it over WiFi only. This is a feature I will re-enable when the bug is resolved.

The Data team is actively investigating your reports of this issue – thanks for bringing it to my attention … As some users already noted, turning off app backup and messaging sync should help reduce the data usage you’re seeing, but if it doesn’t please let us know.

you can turn off app backup in Backup: Settings, Update & Security, Backup, “More options”

you can disable automatic backups across the board, or just individually select the apps you don’t want to backup anymore

at least their "excuse" is that's a BETA and "stuff happens"

When you join the insider preview, it does warn you that the build can consume your data unexpectedly. A bit funny that this warning which is more used to protect Microsoft, and know what you are getting and potentially fall, ended up true. Reminds me of a bug in Windows 7 during its public beta program where Microsoft warn the potential data loss (as usual), and it ended up that people with hybrid drive got all their data corrupted.

Sucks. But good it was identified under the Insider Preview, and not official release build.

On my side, I don't have the issue (I am on the Insider program), but that is because this is my new phone, and I didn't transfer my stuff, I started new, so there is nothing to backup/sync with anything, beside 2-3 short messages. Also, I have 6GB plan.

Anyway, a new build coming soon, Microsoft said. So maybe next week, I would assume.

you can turn off app backup in Backup: Settings, Update & Security, Backup, “More options”

you can disable automatic backups across the board, or just individually select the apps you don’t want to backup anymore

at least their "excuse" is that's a BETA and "stuff happens"

they are a multinational corporation and a monopoly on the PC gaming market - you'd think that they could take care of themselves and would not need "minions" crawling out of the woodwork to do it for them

My phone (Lumia 925) has build 10586.11 on it according to about info, and it has a bug of sorts, it started saying that I was out of data about two weeks ago, yet I had 3.5 GB left of my 5GB plan. It makes a noise and says I'm out of data even when I'm connected to wifi. Turning off mobile data completely stopped it, but when I turn it back on, it's back. The data usage app also only shows 2.27 GB used on cellular right now, now that I've actually used the 5 GB's I have.
